Text in French. Shelved in Room F. . Jérôme Pétion de Villeneuve 1756-1794 was a prominent Girondin politician former Mayor of Paris and deputy to the National Convention. He argues that while Louis XVI is guilty of crimes against the nation and subject to trial the Convention must navigate the political and legal implications carefully. Unlike radical Montagnards like Robespierre who favored immediate execution without a trial Pétion supported holding a trial and eventually advocated for submitting the verdict to a public referendum an appel au peuple balancing justice with stability. 1418529.
