1923Oblong 4to., First Edition thus, text in English, title and text in blue and black, with very numerous delightful cartoons throughout, neat signature on title; original illustrated wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, yapped edges, covers mildly age-soiled else a very good, clean copy of a rare booklet. One of the world's oldest trademarks, 'Bibendum' (the 'Michelin Man') was created in 1898 by cartoonist Marius Rossillon ['O'Galop'] at the instigation of Andre Michelin. The figure's first mass appearance was on the company's famous poster of 1898 since when it has continued to represent the Michelin company in over 150 companies. This very scarce booklet was produced to mark the figure's twenty-fifth anniversary. Since text and captions are entirely in English (but printed in France) we assume that this is the English version of a French promotional publication. A RARE SURVIVAL.

1906ref. 64622New York NY: Kalem Moving Picture Co. ca. 1906. Nine original silver gelatin photographs on thin glossy photo stock pencil annotations by Clough on versos of all nine photos 8 sized 9.5 x 7.5 in. and 1 sized 4.5 x 7.5 in. minor chipping & edgewear to a few corners a couple w/ pinholes at corners a couple w/ minor over-exposure still a VG set of images. A very scarce group of original location production stills for 1906 Kalem Moving Picture Co. 1-reel silent films which at the time ran about 10-15 minutes depending on footage and camera speed. The Kalem Moving Picture Co. was first formed in 1905 by George Kleine Samuel Long and Francis J. Marion in 1905 and operated until 1907 when they reorganized as Kalem Co. Inc. and would continue as an independent studio until purchased later by the Vitagraph Company of America. These three men along with their general manager and director Sidney Olcott pioneered the early success of shooting films on location as they had no indoor studios initially. These intriguing photos presumably for either lost or unreleased films capture Gene Gauntier Jack Clark & Carlyle Blackwell filming in the Louisiana Bayou with actors seemingly in Cajun dress; an historical film with actors in French Louis XVI/French Revolution-era costume; and three images of a possible Louisiana Civil War-era plantation drama with pencil annotations on versos misidentifying Carlyle Blackwell and Jack Clark as William S. Hart playing opposite Gauntier. The smaller image captures an actor in blackface clearly in a period drama setting but no location annotations on verso. Their early filmography is quite scarce and apparently some of the early one-reeler silent films are both lost and no record of some titles. Although only grouped with those marked “Louisiana Bayou on location” three of the photos refer to a Kalem Moving Picture Co. Christmas Party with one photo revealing the actors and actresses all in pajamas another with them standing next to the Christmas tree next to a wood burning stove presents with “Kalem” advertising atop the stack and Sidney Olcott & Gene Gauntier standing to the left with Hazel Neason seated and possibly Jane Wolfe and Marian Cooper arrayed behind. The final image depicts the group at a crawfish boil campfire burning in the foreground. Clark 1879-1947 was recruited by Sidney Olcott for Kalem Studios during the silent film era and traveled through 24 countries becoming one of the first American film stars to film on location. Gauntier 1885-1955 was a pioneering writer director and actress in silent films from 1906 to 1920 writing screenplays for 42 films and performing in 87 who launched her career with Biography in their 1906 one-reeler “The Paymaster” and then recruited by Olcott and Francis Marion to join Kalem where she became known as the “Kalem Girl.” Blackwell 1884-1955 was a noted silent film actor director and producer whose early film career remains un-cited as Kalem Moving Picture Co. but is clearly depicted in their early advertising trade literature as one of “The Kalem Players” along with Clark and Gauntier. Clough 1868-1918 was a noted house & sign painter out of Saratoga NY and New Hampshire who also was recruited to build sets and was property manager with Biograph and then Kalem. 1964ref. List3328Brooklyn New York 1964. Twenty-eight page scrapbook measuring 11 x 14 inches. Containing forty-one photographs measuring 5 x 7 inches and smaller and fifty-eight pieces of ephemera forty-three of which are filled-in entry slips from a contest. Cover with wear and large stain contents generally excellent; overall very good to excellent. The Carpetbaggers is a 1964 film directed by Edward Dmytryk based on the controversial 1961 novel of the same name which was banned in several US cities for its depictions of sexuality and violence.1 Offered here is a scrapbook documenting an unconventional marketing campaign for the film’s New York run at Loew’s Metropolitan Theatre in Downtown Brooklyn. The theater’s conventional marketing tactics included contests flyering spraypainting sidewalks and distributing promotional cards for stores. Less conventional ones included employees reading a gigantic “oversized book” on the subway the “Subway ballyhoo” erecting eight large fake telephone booths and carrying a suitcase reading “I’M ON MY WAY TO SEE THE CARPETBAGGERS AT LOEW’S METROPOLITAN” the “Walking ballyhoo”. The photograph of this last tactic shows a man who at least resembles Adlai Stevenson looking at the suitcase as he walks by; the caption reads: “Let’s start off with a question. . . . IS THERE ANY REASON WHY ADLAI STEVENSON OUR AMBASSADOR TO THE U N. . . . . SHOULD NOT BE ADVISED THAT THE ‘CARPETBAGGERS’ WERE AT THE LOEW’S METROPOLITAN THEATRE.” All thirty-seven of the various tactics are listed in a caption at the end of the scrapbook. The scrapbook also acts as a document of Downtown Brooklyn in 1964 especially its then-bustling shopping area on Fulton Street. Stores include Woolworth’s E.J. Korvette’s Bond’s Bunnie Towne and more. Though mainly department store interiors it also shows in several shots the subway entrances and cars street scenes smaller shops and restaurants and the exterior and lobby of Loew’s Metropolitan. Opened in 1918 the theatre closed in 1996 and re-opened in 2002 as a church. The Carpetbaggers received mixed reviews and its share of controversy particularly for a nude scene which had to be cut from the US release. In response to the controversy actress Carroll Baker who appears in the nude scene told the New York Times that her “children have seen things on the benches of Central Park that have never been shown in movies.”2 Of interest to historians of film and film marketing and of the Downtown Brooklyn neighborhood. 1 Dawn B.
