1840Best.-Nr. 8144New York: John B. Rey 1840. Broadside 16.5 x 22.3 cm. printed one side only with split fountain roller rainbow. Illustrated. Date range from the range of listings in directories etc. We would be tempted to call this a trade card but for the thin stock it is printed on more fit to be pasted up than handed out. Described as a "manufacturer of cordials bitters essences syrups rock candy sweetmeats brandy fruits sweet plain and fancy chocolate prepared cocoa cocoa paste vermicelli maccaroni catsups sauces extracts etc. John B. Rey was located at 31 & 33 Burling Slip" Doggett's New-York City Directory for 1848-49 page 340; earlier listings were just "33 Burling Slip". At the time of the Directory's publication seven chocolate makers were listed. John B. Rey's operation was taking advantage of the rapid industrialization of the chocolate making process as this card depicts two pieces of large machinery - a melangeur right and a cacao press - that would have been driven by steam notice the belt drives in the image. Burling Slip was just north of South Street and the South Street Seaport with its famous fish market. Although the printer is not credited this is a noteworthy piece of promotional printing as it displays the split fountain or rainbow roller process of printing multiple colors simultaneously in this case a mirrored red green and blue. A few light creases from folding; some light soiling or foxing. Still near very good and very handsome. Rare. Unrecorded. OCLC records no copies. John B. Rey unknown books

Best.-Nr. 3384Paris: Imprimerie et Librairie Administratives de Paul Dupont 1858. . Small folio late 19th century marbled boards cloth spine slightly abraded; original blue printed wrappers bound in; blindstamp of the Boston Public Library on the first page; unopened. The July 1858 issue of "Annales du Commerce Exterieur". The immediate cause of the 1857 panic was the failure of the New York branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Co. a major financial force that collapsed following widespread embezzlement. Others causes included the removal of funds from U.S. banks by British investors which raised questions about the overall U.S. economy. The fall of grain prices which spread economic misery into rural areas. The collapse of land speculation programs that depended on new rail routes ruining thousands of investors. Investor confidence was further shaken in mid-September when 30000 pounds of gold were lost at sea in a shipment from the San Francisco Mint to eastern banks. The gold and SS Central America sank during the North Carolina Hurricane of 1857. Public confidence in the government's ability to back its paper currency with specie was shaken as well. Eventually the panic and depression spread to Europe South America and the Far East. No recovery was evident in the United States for a year and a half and the full impact did not dissipate until the Civil War. The South was hurt less than the other regions of the country and many there concluded that the superiority of their economic system had been vindicated this has been posited as a contributing factor to the secession of many of the Southern States resulting in the Civil War. Pages 57-62 outline the trade between France and the United States during the years 1856-1857 with a retrospective look at past trade. Paris: Imprimerie et Librairie Administratives de Paul Dupont, 1858. hardcover books
1876Best.-Nr. 13129Philadelphia 1876. Chromolithographed trade card 3 x 6.5 inches. Minor wear paper and adhesive remnants on verso from removal from scrapbook or similar album. Overall very good. A bright and colorful trade card advertising one of Philadelphia's most successful businesses at the time of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in that city. John B. Stetson 1830-1906 was the son of a successful New Jersey hatter. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis and told he didn't have long to live Stetson traveled west to Colorado for the dry mountain air. Near Pike's Peak sometime in the early 1860s Stetson invented the cowboy hat -- lightweight wide-brimmed waterproof and made out of animal felt usually beaver or rabbit skins. Because it sat easily atop the head offered good protection from the sun could be used to fan the flames of open-air fires and could even carry water Stetson's "Boss of the Plains" style became the most popular hat in the American West. Stetson returned to Philadelphia in 1865 and set up a factory that would turn out millions of hats in the next century and a half. The present trade card emanates from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of American independence. An illustration of two women and three men show them all wearing Stetson's trademark hats; his address at the time was 1748 to 1754 North 4th Street; his factory would eventually grow to encompass over nine acres and produce over two million hats a year. By 1886 Stetson was the most prolific hat maker in the world. unknown books

Toned some small repaired tears using reversible archival ph-neutral paper-repair tape very good to near fine. Very Good. An interesting document of privateering in the Peninsular war this 'Public Instrument of Protest' documents a Portuguese captain and crew complaint in detail to an English notary. After sailing from Calcutta to Brazil and then from Rio to just outside of Lisbon their ship the 700-ton 'Oceano' was seized and comprehensively ransacked by a French privateer the 'Lion' out of Lorient. Most of the crew and passengers were offloaded onto a passing American vessel the 'Leda' bound for Lisbon. Meanwhile the 'Lyon' escorted her prize towards the nearest French port but before a friendly haven was reached they were both set upon by the brigantine HMS 'Achates'. The 'Lyon' escaped but the 'Ocean' was captured by Commander Morrison and the 'Achetes'. The 'Ocean' was taken to Plymouth and moored in the Hamoaze. The remaining Portuguese crew who had been forced to remain aboard the 'Ocean' by the French got a message to the 'Ocean's Master Dn. Ignacio Joze Martins and he and the boatswain made their way to Plymouth as quickly as possible. The sworn statement presented here is in English thanks to the translation given by Francisco Martins d' Magalhaens master of a Portuguese ship "now dwelling in Plymouth" The 'Oceano' sailed from Calcutta to Brazil arriving 10th February 1813. She left Rio on 4th April all was plain sailing until the afternoon of the 7th June off the Rock of Lisbon when the 'Lion' showed up first under false British colors then French. The fighting was fierce the privateer was driven off once but eventually the 'Oceano' was taken. The night of the 7th June was spent by the French 'conveying everything Moveable and Valuable from the Ocean to the Privateer'. The 'Leda' the US vessel landed the majority of the 'Ocean's crew including the Master in Lisbon on the evening of the 9th June.Monday 14th June the 'Lyon' engaged in a running battle with HMS 'Achates' and escaped but the 'Achates' did capture the 'Ocean'. Wednesday 16th June the 'Ocean' arrived in Plymouth under the watchful eye of the 'Achates'. Receiving the crew's message the Captain of the 'Ocean' left Lisbon for Falmouth and then Plymouth arriving on the 20th July. The document was dated 21st July 1813. 1809Best.-Nr. 47399London. 1809. A Failed Opportunity to Normalize U.S.-British Trade Relations Rare printing of a British Parliamentary "slip bill" seeking to reestablish trade between Great Britain and the United States a few years before the outbreak of the War of 1812 and in the midst of great tension between the two nations. This bill was considered by Parliament in the spring of 1809 in the wake of President Jefferson's rescinding the Embargo Act and following the negotiations between U.S. Secretary of State Robert Smith and British envoy David Erskine which created a glimmer of hope that Anglo-American relations might be repaired after a period of great stress and turmoil. In March 1809 Jefferson signed the Non-Intercourse Act which rescinded the Embargo of 1807 and held out the promise of resuming trade with England and France if either of those nations ended its commercial restrictions toward the United States. The Erskine-Smith negotiations of April held out the promise of improved relations and in May the Parliament considered the present bill which permitted trade between Great Britain and the United States to be carried on in American ships. Unfortunately Prime Minister Canning disavowed the Erskine-Smith Agreement in late May and Anglo-American relations continued to deteriorate culminating in outright warfare in 1812. Slip bills are printed during the legislative process in small numbers for the use of legislators and staff. They are ephemeral items and their survival is rare. A printed note before the text of the bill reads "the figures in the margin denote the Number of the Folios in the written copy" which indicates just how early in the legislative process these bills were printed. OCLC locates only a single copy at the University of Massachusetts. Folio. Lightly tanned around the edges. Near fine. OCLC 49887290. unknown books
