1843réf. 41470New Orleans 1843. Printed folio sheet folded to 4 pp each page 9-1/4" x 11-1/4." Printed on recto of first leaf only interior pages blank addressed in ink on last page to Captain J. Keyes Florence Alabama. Old folds address page worn. Blank hole where seal was broken no text affected. Text clean. Very Good. The head of the firm Maunsel White of New Orleans was an energetic Irish immigrant. He married the daughter of a wealthy Creole merchant allied with Andrew Jackson. Wikipedia says "White maintained a lifelong friendship with Jackson for whom he served as a cotton factor from 1826 until Jackson's death in 1845." White carefully delivers hopeful but cautious news to his clients. He celebrates "the marvellous increase in the growth" of cotton "resulting in a crop larger by far than any that has preceded it." However "the next crop will show a considerable falling off. From the onset the season opened unfavorably" because of rains and other weather problems. But "new and extensive channels of trade infused fresh vigor and life into the manufacturing districts of Great Britain." The Letter demonstrates the importance of the South's commercial connection with England. He reminds his customers of "a subject of great importance and one which cannot be too frequently impressed upon your mind; we mean the picking and ginning of the staple the necessity of which is sometimes lost sight of in the desire of sending Cotton early to market." This necessity of course would be met with slave labor. We do not locate this printed letter on OCLC as of November 2025 although OCLC records several items relating to Maunsel White: a letter from Andrew Jackson to White in 1842; the firm's business records at the University of North Carolina; and a similar letter on the cotton trade from 1841 at the Library of Congress OCLC 1284917506. unknown books

1816réf. 40803London: Printed for J. M. Richardson Cornhill Opposite the Royal Exchange 1816. 3-28pp. Light scattered foxing. Bound in modern cloth withdrawal stamp on front pastedown; inoffensive faint blindstamp on blank corner of title leaf. Else Very Good. Our collation matches that of the bibliographers. The nameless author disclaims any "intention to advocate the revival or regret the abolition of the Slave Trade. . . It is a traffic so objectionable in almost every respect that being abolished for the most part I hope never to see it revived and that every endeavour will be made to realize those advantages which the zeal of the authors of the Abolition has induced them to expect." However "The passage of the registration bill would constitute an unwarranted interference of the central power in the planters' private affairs" Ragatz. The property right of the West Indian colonists in their slaves is non-negotiable. Slaves comprise "the most valuable property of our colonists." Parliament's interference with "the private rights and private property of our colonists. . . would absolutely and tyrannically deprive the individuals whose property it is proposed to regulate and affect of those constitutional means of redress which all British subjects are entitled to." The pamphlet prints resolutions of West Indian Planters objecting to any such intrusions on their rights. The anonymous author objects to the African Institution's "representations of the miseries and hardships of slaves and in circulating ignorantly and unguardedly no doubt the most unfounded calumnies on the subject. If these gentlemen were to compare the situation of the Irish peasantry with that of our colonial slaves they would find they were comparing the extreme of wretchedness with comparative comfort." The reception of a Report concerning the regulation of Trade between the North American Colonies and the West India Islands and "the Countries belonging to the United States of America" is noted. The author argues that "notwithstanding the preferential duty rate of 10s. per hundredweight enjoyed by West Indian sugar as against East Indian the latter could be entered for internal consumption so as to afford a large profit to importers. Album 2.5" x 15.5" x 11.5"; photographs 13.75" x 11"; containing 129 albumen or early silver bromide original photographs mounted on to cloth backing along with several blueprints; a handful of additional photographs are laid in with a paper wrap. Most of the images are uncredited though about six have the photographer's stamps on the back. Album cover stamped in gilt with the name of the firm. Small silver plaque affixed to the center of the cover with the name E F Steck engraved upon it. Steck was the superintendent of the company. The inside front cover is marked #1. Exhaustive catalog documenting firefighting equipment used during the waning days of the horse-drawn fire truck era with photographs of various fire pumps hook and ladder trucks fire extinguishers fire grenades water nozzles etc. and two blueprints showing the inner workings of a carbonic acid chemical engine pump and extinguisher. Probably a unique prototype to hold all of the original photographs taken of the company's inventory. Photographs depict an array of trucks and apparatus including several views of the same product used by fire companies from across the country including Massachusetts Pennsylvania New York Chicago Los Angeles and Oregon. While the majority of the images show unmanned trucks and apparatus against a white canvas background there are some photographs taken on the street in front of fire stations or with firefighters to show scale or in action shots notably one image depicting nine men on a ladder reaching to the top of a five-story building and firefighters shooting water at smoldering buildings. A few images capture civilians usually on the periphery or looking out windows. The first 80 photographs in the album have red and white number labels on the reverse. The following 27 photographs are not numbered but are titled and listed by the manufacturer's style type; there are 13 styles and between one and three photographs of each style. The next 20 photographs feature a variety of apparatus and the last two depict fire extinguisher products. Unique. unknown books

The company produced all manner of "electro-silver-plated" tableware; depicted in the photographs. In addition to daily utensils and serving dishes of all kinds e.g. cut glass cruits for every form of entertainment there are elaborate decorative centerpieces for table decoration. Very good; spine label partially abraded. 8vo xvi 1 - 232 pp. Statesman statistician and economist the author had an eminent career in public policy making and teaching. He was also responsible for the complete overhaul and modernization of the Prussian satistical bureau beginning in 1810. He was the author of several books on statistics as well as economics and law. The work offered here is his first publication.
