1758rif. 1029H19London : Printed for the Author 1758 . First edition. Disbound. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A scarce collection of Grub Street satire by Joseph Lewis as "Lancelot Poverty-Struck" containing an early recorded use of the phrase "hell to pay." Disbound. The notably scarce first edition seldom found in commerce. Numerous errors in pagination. This copy is lacking B1 pp.1-2 and G1 pp.49-50 but is otherwise complete. Published pseudonymously as the work of "Lancelot Poverty-struck an unfortunate Son of Apollo; and Author of the Westminster Magazine." ESTC No.: T173271. A lively collection of 18th-century songs dialogues acrostics and satirical verse. The poems take aim at everything from political and clerical hypocrisy to poverty publishing drunkenness fashionable society and theatrical celebrity. Among the pieces are "The Author and the Printer A Dialogue by Way of Introduction" "The Petition of Lancelot Poverty-Struck to David Garrick Esq;" "Apollo and Lancelot A Dialogue" "The Sentiments of a Mob; or The Unaccountable Murder" "The Cheats; A New Song" and a succession of satirical epitaphs and occasional verses. Of particular bibliographical interest is "A Word to my Publisher" towards the close of the volume evidence for Lewis's authorship and for his connection with Mother Midnight's Comical Pocket-Book.
