réf. 143753Mexico: Joaquín Mortiz 1970. First edition and only edition number 533 of 3000 copies of Carrión's second book a collection of six short stories employing the interior monologue by "perhaps Mexico's most important conceptual artist" Torre. Uncommon on the market: we were unable to trace any other copies for sale or at auction. Ulises Carrión 1941-1989 wrote De Alemania after his language and literature studies in France and Germany. In 1972 Carrión left Mexico and moved to Amsterdam where he founded the legendary Other Books and So bookstore and event space. He remains best known for his decisive role in defining and conceptualising the artistic genre artists' book through his manifest The New Art of Making Books 1975 "in which he extols the virtues of the book as a three-dimensional medium and convincingly refutes the idea of its being an accidental container of literature: 'A book is not a case of words nor a bag of words nor a bearer of words.' Arguing that if in the 'old art the writer writes texts . in the new art the writer makes books' Carrión urged writers and artists to take advantage of the possibilities that new printing technologies such as the mimeograph had to offer to bypass the market and to form alternate distribution networks by fostering communities of like-minded practitioners" Torre. Octavo. Original pictorial white wrappers printed in purple and black titles to spine and front cover in black and white. Extremities a little rubbed vertical creasing to spine the binding otherwise firm and unfaded slight spotting to top edge internally clean and fresh; a very good copy indeed. réf. 147821Rare Javanese kris commonly used in the pencak silat martial art native to Indonesia from the collection of General William T. Sherman preserved in his military trunk. Ulysses S. Grant a close friend of Sherman’s went on a “World Tour” after his second presidential term had ended. It has been suggested that Grant collected a few souvenirs for his dear friend while visiting Asia. When the Grant family returned from their trip Sherman greeted Grant at a reunion held by the veterans of the Army of the Tennessee. In good condition with handle missing. The piece measures 14.5 inches. General William Tecumseh Sherman and General Ulysses S. Grant were key figures in the Union Army during the American Civil War forming a close personal and professional relationship that significantly influenced the war’s outcome. Grant known for his strategic leadership recognized Sherman’s military talents early in the war and the two collaborated on major campaigns including the Vicksburg Campaign 1863 and Sherman’s March to the Sea 1864–1865. Their coordinated efforts exemplified the Union’s strategy of total war aimed at crippling the Confederacy’s resources and morale. After the war their partnership continued with Sherman succeeding Grant as Commanding General of the U.S. Army in 1869 when Grant became President. Their mutual trust and shared military philosophy played a crucial role in shaping U.S. military strategy and post-war reconstruction efforts. unknown

Ulysses S. Grant served as president of the United States from March 4 1869 to March 4 1877. In the address Grant argued that the people must put their trust in Congress stating: "In all periods of history controversies have arisen as to the succession or choice of the chiefs of states and no party or citizens loving their country and its free institutions can sacrifice too much of mere feeling in preserving through the upright course of law their country from the smallest danger to its peace on such an occasion; and it can not be impressed too firmly in the hearts of all the people that true liberty and real progress can exist only through a cheerful adherence to constitutional law. unknown books

Jh. Als Aufklärer im Sinne des aristokrat. Patriotismus leistete er Reformarbeit in Publizistik Ökonomie und Erziehung. A whittler since boyhood he soon began carving figures from wood in his spare time. He decorated the outside of his barbershop and filled the inside with his reliefs and freestanding carvings. During his lifetime Davis created more than three hundred works producing a varied but unified body of wood sculpture that reflects his faith humor and dignity. Daviss sculptures range in height from six to more than forty inches and can be divided into several major categories: religious images patriotism works influenced by African forms abstract decorative objects and portraits of African and American leaders. The latter includes what many regard as Daviss masterworka series of forty carved busts of all the U.S. presidents through George H. W. Bush. Because the artist rarely sold his sculptures his carvings have had limited exposure outside of Georgia. Davis wanted his work to stay together after he died and most of his sculpture is now held by the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation in Savannah. The Treasure of Ulysses Davis accompanies an exhibition organized by the High Museum of Art Atlanta. The definitive introduction to Daviss work the book features full-color reproductions of 120 sculptures. . 2008. 1932543279 . University Press of Mississippi hardcover
