2016"The present book is comprised of two different texts, 'The Lament of Old Serbia' by Abbot Seraphim Ristic? of Dec?ani from 1864, and 'The Current unfortunate state of Old Serbia and Macedonia' by Bishop Sava Barac? of Dec?ani from 1882. Along with these two texts is a short letter by Bishop Sava to the 1878 Berlin Congress."These two narratives are "profoundly valuable testimonies of the oppression under which the Serbs of Kososvo, Metohija and Macedonia lived in the last decades of Ottoman rule. The authors make use of concrete anecdotal examples of the almost daily atrocities , robberies and other acts of violence against the Orthodox Christian population" 118p.[2 copies found in WorldCat] Book

2005Travelling in Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and the newly independent Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Myer encounters a bewildering array of political and cultural opinions-Orthodox Christians and Muslims, communists and nationalists, warlords and modernizers. His investigations take him to Orthodox weddings and Easter parades, political meetings and religious ceremonies. He encounters widows and witches, dervishes and mystics. Throughout he remains fascinated by the human dimension of Macedonia"s deep-seated identity crisis. More than a simple travelogue, People of the Storm God casts light on the troubled history of Macedonia and its unique melting pot of politics, religion and ethnicity. This book evocatively reveals both the extraordinary cultural diversity of the Balkans and the weight of history borne by its different peoples. Book
1947Collection of charming illustrated short stories by Greek American writer and artist (born in Macedonia 1896) reflecting the characters, folklore and events he remembered from the Greek villages of his youth. "Greece has sent its young men into all parts of the world; but whether pig-herding in Macedonia, waitering in an aristocratic cafe in Constantinople, or washing dishes or professoring in Boston, a Greek remains a Greek. George Demetrios is such a remembering Greek. With the sure wisdom of an economical drawing pencil and magic freshness of word, he has evoked unforgettably the Greek landscape and psyche. In twenty-five drawings and stories, small masterpieces all, he has made real as the fingers on your hand a few scoundrels and more credibly good people than you are likely to run into soon again." 245p. illus.Text neat and complete, paper slightly age-toned DJ repaired now in protective sleeve. 2004"The death of Tito and the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s shattered the Balkans, unleashing all the horror of extreme nationalism. Macedonia seemed to have been spared the blood-letting. In reality, it was only postponed Macedonia remains a powder-keg waiting to explode.A bloody rebellion by Albanian guerrillas demanding equal rights to the dominant Slavs in Macedonia has killed and wounded hundreds of people, many of them innocent civilians, and set off fears that the crisis would suck in surrounding Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria and Greece. International intervention brought an uneasy halt to the internecine blood-letting in the summer of 2001, but hardline Macedonian nationalists, including some under investigation by the international war crimes tribunal at The Hague, have hindered full implementation of the peace agreement signed in August of that year. There are fears that the National Liberation Army will renew its campaign, and that this will set the stage for more ethnic cleansing in the heart of Europe. John Phillips has covered both the fighting on the front line in Tetovo and other cities as well as the behind-the-scenes diplomatic intrigue in Skopje. A journalist and historian by training, he shows, in frightening detail, just now dangerous the instability in Macedonia is for any hope of a lasting peace in the Balkans. This book will be vital reading for all those interested in the state of the world today and in the Europe of tomorrow." 230p. bibliography.index Book
