2000"At the end of the twentieth century people spoke as if the Balkans had plagued Europe forever." "Mark Mazower dispels current Western cliches and replaces stereotypes with an account of how mountains, empires and religions have shaped their inhabitants' lives. As a bridge between Europe and Asia the Balkans has been exposed to a constant incursion of nomadic peoples across the centuries. Mountain ranges made farming hard and political control almost impossible and allowed small communities to live side by side through to the end of the twentieth century. Empires based on religion not ethnicity shaped customs and beliefs in ways that did not entirely vanish with the coming of modernity." A short but well researched introduction to the complex and always compelling history of the Balkans. 160p. bibliography. index Book

1997Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. ; 0.5 x 8.69 x 5.55 Inches; 88 pages; Blunt, honest and tenacious, Antigonus II Gonatas assumed the title King of Macedonia in 283 BC and reigned for more than forty years. Pragmatic and occasionally ruthless, he was a well-educated man with a keen interest in philosophy. He gathered about him poets, philosophers and historians; his long reign, despite vicissitudes, re-established Macedonia as a nation. Janice J. Gabbert portrays the eventful life of this enigmatic king in a lively and engaging manner. Her aim is to trace the political career of a man about whose life almost no official records survive. Taking into account the most recent epigraphical evidence, the author brings to life a fascinating political figure. This is the first study entirely devoted to Antigonus for over eighty years.

2009Historia - Einzelschriften 184; 254 pages; In 224 BC, under the hegemony of the King of Macedon, Antigonos Doson, Greek states joined together to form a symmachy that held strong until the second Macedonian war. In the center of this study on this Hellenistic group are questions on its formation and role, the role of Macedonia, the differing interests of its members, and of the eventual cause of its failure. The results shed new light on the composition, structure, and functioning of this federation. German text.

1992Very light bumping to corners of book. Else fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; 0.94 x 8.66 x 5.59 Inches; 304 pages; Among Alexander's successors, Lysimachus is the forgotten man; when he is recalled it is usually as brutal oppressor of the Greeks, or conversely, as a mediocre little man spurred into action only late in life by a domineering woman. As the first full-length study of Lysimachus in the English language, this book aims to reassess Lysimachus' achievements, which although ephemeral, foreshadowed the growth of the Pergamene and Byzantine empires. Helen Lund sets Lysimachus' actions against the background of the early Hellenistic world, marked by extreme political instability and constant warfare, but also by great developments in city building, portraiture and numismatics. Lysimachus' practice in warfare, kingship, and government is compared and contrasted with that of his contemporaries, his predecessors, and his successors in order to set his achievements in the context of a continuum of imperial rule in Asia Minor. The evidence for Lysimachus's rule is set in its literary, political and social context. Covering Lysimachus's rise from governor of the obscure satrapy of Thrace to ruler of a vast Hellespont-centered kingdom, this book analyzes his skills as warrior and diplomat, and examines the factors which motivated him at each stage of his career. Helen Lund discusses images of Lysimachus in literature, his contribution to early Hellenistic kingship ritual and royal propaganda, offering a completely fresh approach to the dynastic struggle which ended his career.
