2000"At the end of the twentieth century people spoke as if the Balkans had plagued Europe forever." "Mark Mazower dispels current Western cliches and replaces stereotypes with an account of how mountains, empires and religions have shaped their inhabitants' lives. As a bridge between Europe and Asia the Balkans has been exposed to a constant incursion of nomadic peoples across the centuries. Mountain ranges made farming hard and political control almost impossible and allowed small communities to live side by side through to the end of the twentieth century. Empires based on religion not ethnicity shaped customs and beliefs in ways that did not entirely vanish with the coming of modernity." A short but well researched introduction to the complex and always compelling history of the Balkans. 160p. bibliography. index Book

1983Very faint Bumping to 1 corner. Else very minor shelfwear. ; In 215 BC in the second Punic War, Philip V of Macedonia sent an emissary to Hannibal in order to form an alliance with the Carthaginian general. This alliance was formalized in a treaty, the document which provides the corpus for this study. In this treaty is a list of "divine witnesses", which comprise the "official pantheon" of Carthage. The organization of the material and the presentation of the god-lists of all the treaties in a series of charts in Appendix I as well as the extensive indexes and bibliography make the book a useful reference work. Any further treatment of West Semitic pantheons will have to take this study seriously and all who are interested in Near Eastern religion will consult this work with great profit. ; The Johns Hopkins Near Eastern Studies; 10.5 x 0.75 x 7.25 Inches; 236 pages
1997Minor scratches to front wrap else Fine ; 0.77 x 8.5 x 5.46 Inches; 320 pages; The papers collected in this volume present a systematic survey of the struggles of Athens, Sparta and Thebes to dominate Greece in the fourth century - only to be overwhelmed by the newly emerging Macedonian kingdom of Philip II. Additionally, the situation of Greeks in Sicily, Italy and Asia is portrayed, showing the geographical and political diffusion of the Greeks in a broader historical context. This is a book that will provide the reader with a clearly drawn and vivid picture of the main events and leading personalities in this decisive period of Greek history.
