1955ref. 510872Casa M. Danesi 1955. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. NEAR FINE. 'With a brief History of the Order of St. John from its Inception to the present Day.' SIGNED by the author on the limitation page copy number 457 of an edition limited to 2000 copies. liii 428pp. 2 foldout plans 50 tipped-in Color plates and 301 b/w plates on about 100 pages. Large 4to 12.5' x 8.75' sewn binding in red cloth gilt stamped spine lettering white stamped Maltese cross to front cover. Spine lightly bumped at tail otherwise exceedingly clean and fresh; with the scarce dust jacket showing some wear and dampstain to spine now wrapped in mylar. 'Exhaustive architectural monographs are few and seldom provided with adequate illustrations. This sumptuous volume is then a rarity describing not only the fabric of Malta's notable Co-Cathedral but also photographing every monument and giving the text of every inscription. This quality of completeness deserves the highest praise. A short introduction on the Order of Knights Hospitaller puts the church in its historical background and its architecture is then described by Mr. Raymond Judge and from notes by Dr. Quentin Hughes who regards the building in spite of its High Renaissance style and decora-tion as essentially an example of the Early Baroque based on the churches of the Counter Reformation and especially on the Ges. This brand new was seen by the Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar who visited Rome in 56g and its lessons incarporated by him in St. John built in 1573-7. But the most outstanding feature is the slightly finted vault possibly founded on precedents in Khodes or Sicily though it seems to have a more immediate connexion with Juan de Herrera's archway in the front of Valladolid Cathedral a feature hitherto regarded as faulty construction: an explanation not tenable at Malta. Every chapel and each work of art is described and the abundant and well-produced colour and half-tone plates provide a most thorough record of the building its contents and its rich colour-decoration. It is devoutly to be wished that other great monuments of art will find historiographers as learned as patient and as munificent.' John H. Harvey review in Antiquaries Journal. Casa M. 1955ref. 5325Rome Italy: Casa M. Danesi 1955. First Edition Limited Edition. hardcover. Good. N/A. Publication: Rome Casa M. Danesi 1955 Formatting: Folio pp. liii 428 CCCI plates. Condition Report: Good. The original red cloth binding remains tight and structurally sound with the bright white Maltese cross and gilt spine lettering presenting cleanly against the boards. The extremities exhibit only minor shelf-wear. The original cream dust jacket is largely intact but shows typical age-related toning light surface foxing and minor edgewear along the spine ends. Internally the hinges are strong and the text block is predominantly clean; however the book's overall grade is reduced to Good as several of the black-and-white plates have sustained surface damage due to previous page adhesion. Despite this internal flaw it remains a handsome and sturdy copy. Catalogue Note: First Edition limited to 2000 copies of which this is number 1478. The limitation page bears the author's signature in blue ink. A printed errata slip is neatly tipped into the preliminary pages. This monumental work stands as a definitive historical and architectural record of St. John's Co-Cathedral. The volume is profusely illustrated containing two folding plans 50 colour plates including a striking reproduction of Caravaggio's The Beheading of St. John the Baptist and over 700 black-and-white figures across 301 plates. Complete copies retaining the original dust jacket are scarce on the open market particularly in signed limited states making it a sought-after reference for collectors of Maltese heritage and the history of the Knights Hospitaller. A landmark achievement in Maltese historiography The Church of St. John in Valletta offers an exhaustive exploration of one of Europe's finest Baroque masterpieces. Sir Hannibal P. Scicluna meticulously documents the conventual church of the Knights Hospitaller detailing its soaring architecture artistic treasures and the rich legacy of the Order of St. John from its inception. Profusely illustrated and comprehensive in its scope this volume stands as a vital historical record of a monument that survived the devastation of the Second World War. Casa M. Danesi hardcover
