A comprehensive official record of the impeachment trial of Levi Hubbell. Hubbell was a judge on Wisconsin's 2nd Circuit a position he held by virtue of a prior appointment to the state Supreme Court. In 1853 he was accused of eleven separate charges of "corrupt conduct and malfeasance" including embezzlement taking bribes and luring women into hotel rooms using his position. The heated proceedings went on for a month. Impeached but not removed Hubbell holds the dubious distinction of being the first state official impeached in Wisconsin. He resigned three years later. He went on to a career as a representative in the state legislature and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Again accusations of corruption led to his resignation as U.S. Attorney. Charles Carr Dey 1854-1935 a former owner of this copy began his legal practice in Milwaukee. He later moved to Salt Lake City Utah and established himself as an eminent attorney and judge. unknown

The trial is highly significant for the involvement of Phillips' defense counsel Lemuel Shaw 1781-1861 whom the defendant specifically requested. Following his years in private practice Shaw went on to build a towering career as a politician and jurist. As Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court he presided during a critical era when American common law was actively being forged. Legal historian Leonard W. Levy famously characterized Shaw as arguably "America's greatest magistrate" making this scarce record of his early defense work highly desirable to legal historians. The Guards distinguished themselves at the Siege of Boston and elsewhere. In 1807 Colonel David Pinniger refused an order to select six guardsmen for federal service asserting that the Guards's charter permitted the call up of the entire unit but not individual soldiers. Pinniger's refusal precipitated his court martial and that of the fellow officers who supported him. All were removed from office without further penalty. The guards elected replacement officers; no one went into the U.S. Army. This pamphlet was published by the officers after the "unfavorable result" of the court martial in order to protect their reputations. All aspects of the case are covered.
