Adolf Beck was twice the victim of wrongful conviction on two related cases due to mistaken identity. The efforts of the judge who presided over his second trial led to the establishment of a committee of inquiry chaired by the noted jurist and Master of the Rolls Sir Richard Henn Collins 1842-1911. The committee determined that Beck was convicted twice through unreliable methods of identification erroneous eyewitness testimony and a rush to convict the accused. Along with its influence on police procedure the committee's report led to the creation of the English Court of Criminal Appeal in 1907.
