This event was sparked by a politically charged memorial service for the Bourbon Duke of Berry who was assassinated in 1820. It ended with the repression of the Legitimists. The wry inscription reads "offered by the accused Valerius." A fervent Legitimist he was a primary organizer and financier of the memorial ceremony which was seen by government as an incitement to riot. Valerius and his co-defendants were ultimately acquitted.
