A remarkable and apparently unique survival detailing the brutal murder of Giammaria Zotta Bellotto by his fellow townsman Baldassare Zotta a farm laborer from the Trento region harbored a deep-seated grievance against Bellotto holding him directly responsible for significant damages suffered by his family. On the afternoon dopo pranzo of July 10 1822 Zotta ambushed Bellotto from behind striking him repeatedly with a heavy billhook roncola until he was dead. The official report dryly notes that Zotta resorted to a ambush because Bellotto was physically much stronger and Zotta lacked the courage to confront him face-to-face. Zotta was charged under 450 of the Austrian Penal Code of 1803 which governed the territory of Trentino-Alto Adige during this era.
