2021ril. Viziata, spiritosa, disillusa e annoiata, sexy, civettuola, infelice, generosa e sfortunata.

2016New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). In English. 720 p., ills. Memoirs of an Ottoman prince. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib (known in Turkish as 'Ali Vâsib Efendi' - or, using his Turkish surname, as 'Ali Vâsib Osmanoglu') was born in the Çiragan Palace, on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, in 1903. His memoirs deal with the life and times of the Ottoman Imperial family during the last years of the Ottoman Sultanate, as well as with his life during his enforced exile in Hungary, France and Egypt. While in Istanbul he witnessed the First World War, the abolition of the Sultanate in 1923 and then that of the Caliphate in 1924, at which time he was exiled along with the rest of the Imperial family. He was finally allowed to return to his homeland in 1974, after half a century in exile. Ali Vâsib Efendi is the only Ottoman Imperial Prince to have written his memoirs, and they give a unique insight into the people and politics of his day. H.I.H. Prince Ali Vâsib, the great-grandson of Sultan Murad V, was at various times in the presence of the last four Ottoman Sultans as well as the last Caliph. He personally knew the leading figures of the time - such as Enver Pasha. He was a witness to key events in Ottoman history during the last days of the Empire. He lived through the occupation of Istanbul by the Allies - the Ottoman court's most difficult period - and then the exile of the Ottoman Dynasty in 1924.
1989Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers to DJ and traces of removed circulation pastedown. A few cellotape stains to inner covers else Book is VG. ; 1.25 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 376 pages; The city of Memphis on the Nile, which had often served as capital in the long period preceding Egypt's conquest by Alexander the Great, became the country's "second city" following the founding of Alexandria. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence, Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists, papyrologists, and historians of the Hellenistic world, including those concerned with religion. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull, deified as Osorapis, became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure, the Sarapieion, is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures.
