1891380 p. Curiously illustrated by the author in a naive style. Worn original full cloth binding. Lacks endpapers. Large 8vo. 23 cm. A remarkable self-published epic free verse poem that covers a vast landscape of late Victorian-American social and cultural issues and situations. Included is a chapter in black dialect. Probably there is much of local interest in this book. Quite remarkable. W145
1865pp. x, 269. 12mo. 19.5 cm. Original full cloth binding. Some age stain. Manuscript ownership of H. A. Mills. Coffin was a New York journalist and litterateur. His books (usually written under the pseudonym Barry Gray) were extremely popular through the Civil War era, but were quickly forgotten. His humor and observations seemed to lack the bite and originality that made for long-term loyalty and reputation. This particular work, however, contains some entertaining observations on the practice and content of popular publishing in the era. Curious contemporary domestic habits are, of course, discussed in colorful detail. Wright 'American Fiction' II:591. "Marriage is neither heaven nor hell. It is simply purgatory" -- Abraham Lincoln. Scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W 147.

He served as U.S. Attorney General and Secretary of State under President Grover Cleveland, and in the latter position, briefly, under Cleveland's successor, William McKinley. As attorney general, Olney used injunctions against striking workers in the Pullman strike, setting a precedent, and advised the use of federal troops, when legal means failed to control the strikers. As secretary of state, he raised the status of America in the world by elevating U.S. diplomatic posts to the status of embassy.
