Elie Aron Cohen wurde im September 1943 nach Auschwitz deportiert; seine Ehefrau, sein Sohn und seine Schwiegereltern wurden dort ermordet; Cohen selbst überlebte, unter anderem, weil seine Fähigkeiten als Arzt benötigt wurden. Nach 1945 verfaßte er eine Reihe von Schriften über den Holocaust; sein zunächst auf niederländisch erschienenes, später ins Englische, Schwedische und Japanische übersetzte Buch über die nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslager gilt als eine der ersten systematischen Studien über das Vernichtungssystem des NS-Staates.

Title translates as: Vught, Gate of Hell: War memoirs of a Jew. Vught, also known as Hertogenbosch, was a Nazi concentration camp located in Vught near the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. Herzogenbusch was the only concentration camp run directly by the SS in western Europe outside of Germany. The camp was first used in 1943 and held 31, 000 prisoners. 749 prisoners died in the camp, and the others were transferred to other camps shortly before the camp was liberated by the Allied Forces in 1944 (Wikipedia, 2015) .
