2018br. Nell'agosto del 1922 a Bari il proletariato insorge. Non è una semplice scintilla, ma un fuoco che divampa inarrestabile. Un fuoco che cova da tempo, forgiato dalle lotte del Biennio Rosso, in un lembo d'Italia in cui gli "ultimi" hanno da sempre alzato la testa. Sulla prima linea delle barricate ci sono gli Arditi del Popolo, l'esercito proletario che vuole difendere la città dall'avanzata delle camicie nere. L'imperativo è difendere Bari, resistere all'arroganza fascista e al suo orizzonte liberticida. Spalla a spalla, comunisti, socialisti, anarchici, repubblicani e sindacalisti decidono di organizzarsi e resistere armi in pugno, perché le camicie nere non devono passare. A partire da un evento "cittadino", Fabio Salandra affronta la storia dimenticata degli Arditi del Popolo, rievocando l'eroica difesa di Bari, senza sottrarsi però a un generale bilancio dell'esperienza ardito-popolare, nei suoi mille rivoli sovversivi come nel dibattito storiografico. Un lavoro di ricostruzione che restituisce - anche grazie a documenti dell'epoca - il generale clima di quegli anni, e che fa luce su una storia troppo spesso dimenticata ma che ha ancora tanto da insegnare.
