"Depuis quelques années, la conception de cycles culturels, différents les uns des autres par essence, s'oppose à l'ancienne conception du développement uniforme de la civilisation. Les investigations récentes de l'ethnographie paraissent montrer le bien-fondé de la théorie moderne, diffusionniste, disons cyclo-culturelle, et cela quelque contestés que puissent être le nombre, la délimitation et la succession des cycles décrits." Le livre s'attaque à un sujet complexe : le jeu entre émergence de cultures, qui suivraient selon l'auteur des cycles, et diversité biologique humaine. Une sorte de débat nature vs nurture auquel Montandon tente ici d'apporter une réponse systématique. Invoquant nombre de concepts et articulant tant des idées que des faits dispersés, le livre peut autant être lu comme se perdant dans l'esprit de classification que comme un tour de force intellectuel et érudit.
