FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 288 pp. ; 208 illus. 177 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; Were Thomas Jefferson to walk the grounds of Monticello today he would no doubt feel fully at home in the 1000-foot terraced vegetable garden where the very vegetables and herbs he favored are thriving. Extensively and painstakingly restored under Peter J. Hatch's brilliant direction Jefferson's unique vegetable garden now boasts the same medley of plants he enthusiastically cultivated in the early nineteenth century. The garden is a living expression of Jefferson's genius and his distinctly American attitudes. Its impact on the culinary garden and landscape history of the United States continues to the present day. Graced with nearly 200 full-color illustrations "A Rich Spot of Earth" is the first book devoted to all aspects of the Monticello vegetable garden. Hatch guides us from the asparagus and artichokes first planted in 1770 through the horticultural experiments of Jefferson's retirement years 1809–1826. The author explores topics ranging from labor in the garden garden pests of the time and seed saving practices to contemporary African American gardens. He also discusses Jefferson's favorite vegetables and the hundreds of varieties he grew the half-Virginian half-French cuisine he developed and the gardening traditions he adapted from many other countries. 20111020 . 2012. 0300171145 . Very truly yrs Lewis Hatch. A very nice letter on his stationary with his location having changed from 443 East 57th St to 34 East 61st New York. Small closed tear at bottom of letter else near fine. A double sheet print image area approx. 15.5 x 38 cms and with the entire layout on the same sheet folded as issued plus accompanying 340 lines of explanatory text on another page. The Middlesex County Lunatic Asylum at Colney Hatch opened in 1851 and designed by Mr. S. W. Daukes was one of the most imposing institutional structures of the Victorian age. Conceived on a scale that dwarfed contemporary public buildings its main range stretched for nearly half a mile a disciplined almost militaristic fa├ºade articulated by towers gables and ventilation turrets. Daukes adopted the corridor asylum plan but expanded it to monumental proportions creating a linear composition whose sheer length became a defining feature of mid century metropolitan architecture. The central administrative block anchored the design with the long ward wings stepping outward in measured repetitive rhythms that expressed Victorian confidence in order routine and civic responsibility. Within this vast envelope lay a self contained world. Colney Hatch operated as a complete community equipped with workshops laundries kitchens recreation rooms a chapel extensive gardens and even its own water supply and farmland. The architecture embodied the era's belief in structured labour moral management and environmental control as therapeutic tools. Fireproof construction of iron beams brick vaulting and compartmentalised ranges and an elaborate ventilation system signalled the period's concern with safety and hygiene. Severe rather than ornate the building's Italianate character relied on massing and proportion rather than decoration. It stood for decades as the archetype of the Victorian asylum: ambitious orderly and monumental. The illustrations found in leading architectural journals of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as The Builder Building News and The Architect are masterpieces of visual craftsmanship. These illustrations capture the elegance intricacy and stylistic flair of the periodÔÇÖs architecture. Rich in ornamental detail and atmospheric depth they reflect not only the buildings themselves but the artistic sensibilities and design discourse of their age.
