1984201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father (b. 1870) left Yorkshire, England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria, B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay, further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text, accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many, many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel, Lantzville Hotel, Quarterway Hotel, and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Book

In English. 110 p. with rich separate advertisements, and a fine folded b/w map titled "Desert motor-routes" on a scale of 1:4,000,000. Slightly fading on cloth, otherwise a fine copy. First and only edition of this rare complete and very detailed desert motor-routes' guide for the Anglo-Egyptian motorists, printed by the Egyptian Touring Association in Cairo, including details about hospitals, "what to do in cases of accidents on the roads", free legal defence, hotels, garages as well as itineraries, pedestrian crossings, speed limits in the country, parking regulations of Sharia Kasr el Nil, Adly Pasha, no-lights area, railway bridges, postal rates, exchange rates, rates of freight on motor cars by sea and rail, kilometers into miles, transcontinental road London - Istanbul with other useful information. This guide was explained in the introduction as "This handbook has been compiled for the benefit of members and is issued to them free. Extra copies may be obtained from the Head Office, 3 Sh. Cattawi Bey, Kasr el Nil, Cairo, at the price of P.T. 10. It contains a good deal of useful information regarding touring of all kinds in Egypt and abroad including a list of recommended hotels and garages throughout the country. "The president of the Association which was founded in 1932, was H.E. Sir Miles Lampson (1880-1964). He was a British diplomat who was appointed High Commissioner for Egypt and Sudan in 1934. As a result of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty in December 1936, to which Lampson was a signatory, Britain loosened its grip on Egypt and the post title was changed to Ambassador to Egypt and High Commissioner for Sudan in 1936. Lampson continued in this office until 1946. Vice presidents were Sir Stenson Cooke and J. A. Crawford. According to the ETA's service page of the guide, the purpose of the association can be determined as "Association was formed to provide a long-felt want in Egypt, that is, a touring club in the true sense of the word, devoted to the interests of all kinds of travelers. It's a non-profit making co-operative organization with the aim of making the path of the motorist, the airman, the camper, and every other kind of traveler pleasanter and smoother. The E.T.A. is officially recognized by the Egyptian Government and already in its short existence has grown enormously, being able to offer the following very real services to its members: Expert and detailed advice on all touring matters. Expert advice on motoring matters and vetting of cars. Free itineraries to all parts of Egypt and abroad. Reminders are sent to all members when a car and driving license is due for renewal. Renewal of car and driving licenses. Free legal defense for motoring offenses. Triptyques, carnets, and all documents for foreign touring, including passport arrangements. Agents at Alexandria, PortSaid, Suez, and the principal ports to look after the incoming and outgoing motorist and relieve him of all worry. A full stock of maps and guide books of Egypt and other countries. Up-to-date information on the state of roads and desert tracks. Welcome and help from the 100 odd touring clubs of the A.I.T. [i.e. the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme], of which the E.T.A. is a member. Recommended hotels and garages throughout Egypt and the Near East. Insurance for members can be effected at the most advantageous rates, and advice is given. Cars can be driven to any part of Egypt, by experienced drivers. Guides are provided. Other benefits, it is hoped, will be given in due of course.". Not located in OCLC. "1938-39 Edition" of the series (not published more than two years) is located in OCLC in no. 862336537.

1894ref. 120023AB1894. London Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent & Co. Ltd. 1894. 26.5 cm x 18.5 cm. Frontispiece VI 188 pages.18 illustrations including a map of the region around the Pyramids of Gizeh Mena Hotel Bulak. Hardcover publisher's original green cloth with gilt lettering and gilt embossed pictoral on front board. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Lower corner boards slightly bumped. Marking on front paste-down. Valleys between pastedowns and endpapers show tears. Binding a little shaky but overall still firm and strong. Interior is clean and bright. Extremely scarce publication ! Includes for example the following: The Desert and the Nile Valley / Mena House/ Inside the Great Pyramid / The Cemetry at Memphis / The Bazaars in Cairo / Christian and Mohammedan Observances / The Sphinx by Moonlight / Snipe-shooting in Egypt / etc. The book is divided into two parts: The first part deals primarily with describing Egypt as a tourist destination - the sights scenes and peoples encountered; the second part of the book offers "Hints to Invalids. Suggestions to Medical Men." In this latter section based upon a paper read before the British Medical Council in 1894 the benefits of Egypt's varied climate are offered as a cure for diseases "when every other form of treatment has failed." All forms of "chest disease where rest is desirale" chronic bronchitis chronic rheumatism and cases of "renal diseases and sufferers of gravel" would be ameliorated by the Egyptian winter. But "advanced heart disease or advanced organic disease of any organ excepting cases of chronic and extensive lung consolidation tubercular or otherwise which can be greatly benefitted" all forms of skin disease "insomnia except when arising from worry or excessive brain work" and "some forms of neurosis and hypochondriacs with a melancholy tendency" are deemed unsuited for the Egyptian cure. However "the drawbacks to a winter sojourn in Egypt and in fact anywhere out of England" were not to be ignored- the "distance from home" being among them. The book written when it was and in the manner it was gives the modern reader a glimpse into the lives and sensibilites of the upper section of the Victorian society that had the option and ability to find themselves "Wintering in Egypt." A chapter given over to the luxurious Mena House in Cairo is illustrative of the type of lifestyle and standards of comfort that book is aimed at. 'It is pleasant as one passes through the garden of "the precincts" to smell the delightful fragrance of the mignonette which even in the depth of winter is in full bloom. There are many other buildings at Mena which are worth seeing. The swimming bath and the dark photographing room are perhaps the most useful of these. There are arrangments for tennis croquet archery and golf; while opportunities for riding and driving exist on every side.' p.32 The Mena House Family Hotel with 80 guest rooms was opened in 1887. Originally bulit by the Khedive Ismail Pasha the ruler of Egypt to host Empress Eugenie the wife of Napoleon III Mena house - nicknamed the 'Mud Hut' - and estate grounds was owned and operated by Hugh and Ethel Locke-King. Just five years prior to the books publication the leading society figure of all European spas and resorts from the springs of Baden to the roulette tables of Monte Carlo visited Mena House. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales top had been welcomed by His Highness the Khedive who showed him the Pyramids. After lunch The Egyptian Gazette reported the party 'went over to the Mena Hotel and took coffee there. A year after 'Wintering in Egypt' was published in the winter of 1895-1896 Arthur Conan Doyle the creator of Sherlock Holmes stayed at Mena House. Throughout the 20th Century dignitaries from Winston Churchil and Richard Nixon and Holywood stars like Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra enjoyed the opulent hospitality of Cairo's most prestigious hotels. The hotel served as an Allied hospital during the Great War. Amid the Second World War in November 1943 Mena House hosted a conference between Churchill Roosevelt and the Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek.
