The United States has long recognized that the nationaEURO TMs prosperity and security depend on how we address challenges of disasters poverty famine and disease around the world. The U.S. Agency for International Development USAID has played a vital role in promoting U.S. national and international interests by advancing strategies for employing science technology and innovation to respond to global challenges. The focus by USAID on science technology and innovation is critical to improve development outcomes. At the core of this progress is the engagement of science institutions and other innovative enterprises and their commitment to work in partnership with USAID to research test and scale solutions. The Role of Science Technology Innovation and Partnerships in the Future of USAID provides an assessment and advice on the current and future role for science technology and innovation in assistance programs at USAID and on the role of partnerships in the public and private sectors to expand impact. This report examines challenges and opportunities for USAID in expanding the utilization of science technology and innovation in development assistance; assesses how USAID has deployed science technology and innovation; and recommends priority areas for improvement going forward in partnership with others. paperback

Decades of continuous efforts to address known hazards in the national airspace system NAS and to respond to issues illuminated by analysis of incidents and accidents have made commercial airlines the safest mode of transportation. The task of maintaining a high level of safety for commercial airlines is complicated by the dynamic nature of the NAS. The number of flights by commercial transports is increasing; air traffic control systems and procedures are being modernized to increase the capacity and efficiency of the NAS; increasingly autonomous systems are being developed for aircraft and ground systems and small aircraftaEURO"most notably unmanned aircraft systemsaEURO"are becoming much more prevalent. As the NAS evolves to accommodate these changes aviation safety programs will also need to evolve to ensure that changes to the NAS do not inadvertently introduce new risks. Real-time system-wide safety assurance RSSA is one of six focus areas for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA aeronautics program. NASA envisions that an RSSA system would provide a continuum of information analysis and assessment that supports awareness and action to mitigate risks to safety. Maintaining the safety of the NAS as it evolves will require a wide range of safety systems and practices some of which are already in place and many of which need to be developed. This report identifies challenges to establishing an RSSA system and the high-priority research that should be implemented by NASA and other interested parties in government industry and academia to expedite development of such a system. paperback

Interdisciplinary research is a cooperative effort by a team of investigators each an expert in the use of different methods and concepts who have joined in an organized program to attack a challenging problem. Each investigator is responsible for the research in their area of discipline that applies to the problem but together the investigators are responsible for the final product. The need for interdisciplinary training activities has been detailed over the last 25 years in both public and private reports. The history of science and technology has even shown the important advances that arose from interdisciplinary research including plate tectonics which brought together geologists oceanographers paleomagnetists seismologists and geophysicists to advance the ability to forecast earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In recognition of this the need to train scientists who can address the highly complex problems that challenge us today and fully use new knowledge and technology and the fact that cooperative efforts have proved difficult the National Institute of Mental Health NIMH the National Institutes of Health NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research OBSSR the National Institute on Nursing Research NINR and the National Institute on Aging NIA requested that an Institute of Medicine IOM Committee be created to complete several tasks including: examining the needs and strategies for interdisciplinary training in the brain behavioral social and clinical sciences defining necessary components of true interdisciplinary training in these areas and reviewing current educational and training programs to identify elements of model programs that best facilitate interdisciplinary training. Bridging Disciplines in the Brain Behavioral and Clinical Sciences provides the conclusions and recommendations of this committee. Due to evaluations of the success of interdisciplinary training programs are scarce the committee could not specify the "necessary components" or identify the elements that "best facilitate" interdisciplinary training. However after reviewing existing programs and consulting with experts the committee identified approaches likely to be successful in providing direction for interdisciplinary endeavors at various career stages. This report also includes interviews training programs and workshop agendas used. paperback

Best.-Nr. A9780309472296Paperback / softback. New. Many different groups of people are subject to stereotypes. Positive stereotypes e.g. aEUROoeolder and wiseraEURO may provide a benefit to the relevant groups. However negative stereotypes of aging and of disability continue to persist and in some cases remain socially acceptable. Research has shown that when exposed to negative images of aging older persons demonstrate poor physical and cognitive performance and function while those who are exposed to positive images of aging or who have positive self-perceptions of aging demonstrate better performance and function. Furthermore an individualaEURO TMs expectations about and perceptions of aging can predict future health outcomes. To better understand how stereotypes affect older adults and individuals with disabilities the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine with support from AARP convened a public workshop on October 10 2017. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop. paperback

On August 16 2000 the Board on Life Sciences held a forum on "Environmental Contamination Biotechnology and the Law: The Impact of Emerging Genomic Information." The purpose of the forum was to explore the legal implications of current and developing biotechnology approaches to evaluating potential human health and environmental effects caused by exposure to environmental contaminants and to cleaning up contaminated areas. The forum brought together scientists from academe government and industry and members of the legal community including lawyers and judges to discuss the interface between the use of those approaches and the legal system. paperback

If the United States is to sustain its economic prosperity quality of life and global competitiveness it must continue to have an abundance of secure reliable and affordable energy resources. There have been many improvements in the technology and capability of the electric grid over the past several decades. Many of these advances to the grid depend on complex mathematical algorithms and techniques and as the complexity of the grid has increased the analytical demands have also increased. The workshop summarized in this report was developed as part of an ongoing study of the Committee on Analytical Research Foundations for the Next-Generation Electric Grid. Mathematical Sciences Research Challenges for the Next-Generation Electric Grid summarizes the presentations and discussions from this workshop. This report identifies critical areas of mathematical and computational research that must be addressed for the next-generation electric transmission and distribution system and to identify future needs and ways that current research efforts in these areas could be adjusted or augmented. paperback
Best.-Nr. A9780309476096Paperback / softback. New. The increasing diversity of population of the United States presents many challenges to conducting health research that is representative and informative. Dispersion and accessibility issues can increase logistical costs; populations for which it is difficult to obtain adequate sample size are also likely to be expensive to study. Hence even if it is technically feasible to study a small population it may not be easy to obtain the funding to do so. In order to address the issues associated with improving health research of small populations the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine convened a workshop in January 2018. Participants considered ways of addressing the challenges of conducting epidemiological studies or intervention research with small population groups including alternative study designs innovative methodologies for data collection and innovative statistical techniques for analysis. paperback
