2006Best.-Nr. BN39046Spektrum Akademischer Verlag 2006. Auflage: 2006 21. September 2006. Softcover. 239 x 172 x 24 cm. Chelicerata are a basically terrestrial group of invertebrates including many clades whose representatives have never found an evolutionary way to aquatic live. An exception is made by the spiders which include apart from the famous Argyroneta aquatica a considerable number of hygrophilous species and by the highly diverse aquatic mites which in inland water habitats are represented by members of numerous different clades having evolved an aquatic or amphibious lifestyle along various evolutionary pathways. For the first time in limnofaunistic bibliography the present taxonomic knowledge about these different groups of invertebrates is brought together in an overview for the Central-European fauna. This first volume includes taxonomic keys and ecological information concerning hygrophilous and aquatic spiders a general introduction to mites and the treatment of three mite groups generally known from terrestrial habitats Acaridida Oribatida terrestrial Parasitengona. Furthermore the freshwater-dwelling representatives of the originally marine Halacaridae are treated and the species-rich true freshwater mites Hydrachnidia are represented in a general introduction. Out of the latter group detailed taxonomic treatment and determination keys are presented for members of the superfamilies Stygothrombioidea Hydrovolzioidea Eylaoidea and Hydrachnoidea. Three further volumes are in preparation which will include the remaining four superfamilies of Hydrachnidia and the larval stages of all superfamilies. The chelicerata volumes of this series are a basic tool for all limnologists interested in diversity and ecology - in particular for biologists investigating the ecotones between ground- and surface water between benthos and plankton and between water and land. Ownership Signature Of Walter B. Goad 1925 - 2000 Who Was A Nuclear Physicist At The Los Alamos National Laboratory. During The 1960S Goad Turned His Attention From Physics To Biology And He Is Best Known For His Contributions To The Founding Of Genbank The Most Widely Used Repository For Dna Sequence Data. At Duke University In 1947 He Began To Work On A Phd In Cosmic Ray Physics Under The Supervision Of Lothar Nordheim. In 1950 Nordheim Was Invited To Come To Los Alamos To Contribute To Ongoing Work On The Hydrogen Bomb. As Nordheim's Student Goad Accompanied Him. Although Goad Was Ostensibly At Los Alamos To Finish His Thesis On Cosmic Rays He Soon Became Involved In The Hydrogen Bomb Work Making Some Important Contributions. After The Successful Test Of The Hydrogen Bomb In 1952 Goad Returned To His Thesis Work Obtaining His Phd In 1953. In The 1950S Goad Continued To Work On Problems Related To Nuclear Physics And Nuclear Weapons; He Would Remain At Los Alamos For The Rest Of His Career. In The 1960S Goad Developed An Increasing Interest In Problems In Biology Especially In The Field Of Molecular Biology. To Develop His Interest In 1964-65 Goad Spent A Sabbatical Year At The University Of Colorado Medical Center In Denver. There He Began To Work On Some Problems In Biology Especially In Collaboration With The Physical Chemist John Cann. By The Early 1970S Goad Was Spending Almost All Of His Time Working On Biological Rather Than Physics Problems. In 1974 Goad Became A Key Member Of The Newly Established T-10 Division Theoretical Biology And Biophysics At Los Alamos. During The 1970S The T-10 Group Became Especially Interested In Protein And Nucleotide Sequences. A Significant Quantity Of Such Sequences Were Only Just Beginning To Become Available At This Time. Goad Assembled A Group Of Young Physicists - Including Temple Smith Myron Stein Mike Waterman William Beyer And Minoru Kanehisa - To Work On Mathematical Problems Involved With Sequence Comparison And Analysis. As Part Of This Effort In 1979 Goad Established The Los Alamos Sequence Database To Collect Nucleotide Sequences That Could Be Used For Analysis. The Los Alamos Sequence Database Was Intended To Be A Pilot Project. Goad Solicited The National Institutes Of Health For Funds To Set Up A Larger And More Permanent Sequence Database. In 1981 The National Institutes Of Health Issued A Competitive Request For Proposals To Establish Such A Data Bank. In 1982 A 5-Year $2 Million Contract To Establish And Operate The Genbank Database Was Awarded To Goad And His Co-Workers At Los Alamos Working Jointly With Bolt Beranek And Newman. Goad's Team At Los Alamos Ran Genbank Between 1982 And 1987. Wikipedia Princeton University Press paperback

Winslow Was Born In Boston Massachusetts And Attended Massachusetts Institute Of Technology M.I.T. Obtaining A B.S. In 1898 And An M.S. In 1910. He Began His Career As A Bacteriologist. He Taught At The Massachusetts Institute Of Technology While Heading The Sewage Experiment Station From 1908 To 1910 Then Taught At The College Of The City Of New York From 1910 To 1914. He Was The Youngest Charter Member Of The Society Of American Bacteriologists When That Organization Was Founded In 1899.3 With Samuel Cate Prescott He Published The First American Textbook On The Elements Of Water Bacteriology. In 1915 He Founded The Yale Department Of Public Health Within The Yale Medical School And He Was Professor And Chairman Of The Department Until He Retired In 1945. The Department Became The Yale School Of Public Health After Accreditation Was Introduced In 1947. During A Time Dominated By Discoveries In Bacteriology He Emphasized A Broader Perspective On Causation Adopting A More Holistic Perspective. The Department Under His Direction Was A Catalyst For Health Reform In Connecticut. He Was The First Director Of Yale's J.B. Pierce Laboratory Serving From 1932 To 1957. Winslow Was Also Instrumental In Founding The Yale School Of Nursing. He Was The First Editor-In-Chief Of The Journal Of Bacteriology Serving In That Position From 1916 To 1944. He Was Also The Editor Of The American Journal Of Public Health From 1944 To 1954.3 He Was The Curator Of Public Health At The American Museum Of Natural History From 1910 To 1922. In 1926 He Became President Of The American Public Health AssociationAnd In The 1950S Was A Consultant To The World Health Organization. In 1920 Winslow Published A Widely-Cited Definition Of Public Health In Science Describing The Field As "The Science And The Art Of Preventing Disease Prolonging Life And Promoting Physical Health And Efficiency Through Organized Community Efforts For The Sanitation Of The Environment The Control Of Community Infections The Education Of The Individual In Principles Of Personal Hygiene The Organization Of Medical And Nursing Service For The Early Diagnosis And Preventive Treatment Of Disease And The Development Of The Social Machinery Which Will Ensure To Every Individual In The Community A Standard Of Living Adequate For The Maintenance Of Health. . I Look To See Our Health Departments In The Coming Years Organizing Diverse Forms Of Sanitary And Medical And Nursing And Social Service In Such Fashion As To Enable Every Citizen To Realize His Birthright Of Health And Longevity." The C.-E.A. Winslow Award Is Presented To A Public Health Professional That Has Demonstrated Leadership And Achievement In Practice Research And /Or Education. Among The Most Widely Quoted Health Leaders During His Lifetime Dr. Winslow Believed That Equal In Weight With Scientific Ideas About Health And Disease Was A Commitment To Social Justice - That Social Ills Must Be The First Conquest In The "Conquest Of Epidemic Disease." His Writings Full Of Useful Information In Almost Every Line Lack The Dumbed-Down Interpretations And Political Statements Of Later Ecologists And That Characteristic Together With His Impeccable Education And Genealogy Indicate Some Reasons Why He Is Avoided By Well-Publicized Ecological Activists As If He Had The Plague. . A Classic Of Semi-Science First Published In Italy In 1906 This Being The First Edition In English. Per Wikipedia: Eugenio Vittorio Rignano 1870 In Livorno - 1930 Was A Jewish Italian Philosopher. He Was Born In Livorno To Giacomo Rignano And Fortunata Tedesco Into A Jewish Family. Rignano Edited The Journal Rivista Di Scienza Later Known As Scientia It. His Book The Psychology Of Reasoning 1923 Influenced The Social Anthropologist Edward Evans-Pritchard. His Book Man Not A Machine 1926 Was Replied To By Joseph Needham's Man A Machine 1927. Rignano Took Interest In Biology And Wrote A Book That Argued For The Inheritance Of Acquired Characteristics. He Advanced A Moderated Lamarckian Hypothesis Of Inheritance Known As "Centro-Epigenesis". His Views Were Controversial And Not Accepted By Most In The Scientific Community. His Book The Nature Of Life 1930 Was Described In A Review As Presenting A "Militant At Times Almost An Evangelical Exposition And Defense Of An Energetic Vitalism." However Historian Peter J. Bowler Has Written That Rignano Rejected Both Materialism And Vitalism And Adopted A Similar Position To What Was Known As Emergent Evolution. Li Dazhao One Of The Founders Of The China Communist Party Was An Avid Reader Of Rignano's Works And Chinese Communist Emphasis On Absolute Control Of All Conduct May Be Influenced By The Belief That It Will Result In Changed Behavior Forever In Future Generations Their Stated Goal. . Rignano's Views On Acquired Characteristics And Organic Memory Are Discussed In Detail By Historian Laura Otis And Psychologist Daniel Schacter. The Finding That The Immune System Does Indeed Acquire Inheritable Characteristics Puts Much Of The Lamarckian Debate Into A New And Politically Distressing Light.
