Jiddu Krishnamurti 1895 1986 was an Indian philosopher speaker and writer. In his early life he was groomed to be the new "World Teacher" but later rejected this mantle and withdrew from the Theosophy organization behind it. His interests included psychological revolution the nature of mind meditation inquiry human relationships and bringing about radical change in society. He stressed the need for a revolution in the psyche of every human being and emphasised that such revolution cannot be brought about by any external entity be it religious political or social. Krishnamurti was born in south India in what is now the modern day Madanapalle of Andhra Pradesh. In early adolescence he met occultist and theosophist Charles Webster Leadbeater on the grounds of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Adyar in Madras. He was subsequently raised under the tutelage of Annie Besant and Leadbeater leaders of the Theosophical Society at the time who believed him to be a 'vehicle' for an expected "World Teacher" or avatar. While still a young man he disavowed this idea and dissolved the Order of the Star in the East an organisation that had been established to support it. Krishnamurti said he had no allegiance to any nationality caste religion or philosophy and spent the rest of his life travelling the world speaking to large and small groups as well as individuals. He wrote many books among them "The First and Last Freedom" and "The Only Revolution". David Bohm FRS 1917 1992 was an American scientist who has been described as one of the most significant theoretical physicists of the 20th century and who contributed unorthodox ideas to quantum theory neuropsychology and the philosophy of mind. Bohm warned of the dangers of rampant reason and technology advocating instead the need for genuine supportive dialogue which he claimed could broaden and unify conflicting and troublesome divisions in the social world.Bohm's main concern was with understanding the nature of reality in general and of consciousness in particular as a coherent whole which according to Bohm is never static or complete. Michael Wood was the pseudonym of Joy Hooper, who was a regular contributor to the Theosophical Review, became a devout mystic. In this work she blends religious mysticism with rural folklore and legend. Many felt that she vitalized the essentials of incommunicable mysticism in a dreamy atmosphere. The stories include: The Saint and The Outlaw; The Dream Garden; 'Lox'; The House of Hate; The Fool and the Folk of Peace; The Prince and The Water Gates; The Way of the Herb Gatherer; The Land of Marvellous Night'; The Sinner's Requiem; The Preacher; The Teller of Drolls; The Guardian of the City; and The Tumultuous Shadows. It is a frequently overloked classic of English supernatural fiction. Scarce. OCLC records less than 10 examples in U.S. libraries. NW59

1886ref. 147868Rochester New York: Occult Word Press 1886. First and only edition of this theosophical short story. The Occult Word ran between 1884 and 1889 "for the dissemination of oriental knowledge and the new light from India". The journal was edited by Josephine Cables Aldrich 1843-1917 who founded the Rochester Brotherhood and the first US branch of the Theosophical Society and was the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor's eastern US representative. A friend of Susan B. Anthony she also co-founded the Woman's National University and School of Useful and Ornamental Arts. Although the pamphlet is undated it was advertised in volume seven of The Theosophist in 1886. "Written for The Occult Word" it likely first appeared in the journal but there are no extant copies from the year of its probable publication. WorldCat records only two copies of the pamphlet: Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library and the University of Alabama. Small octavo pp. 14. Original printed wrappers sewn at fold. Creased and lightly soiled front wrapper foxed: in very good condition. Gomes 1794. unknown
