réf. 21090Good. A museum-grade record of the private domestic world of the Busch family. This cohesive display records a wood-paneled living room with exposed beams tiled floor and oval braided rugs a slat-back settee multiple stick/Windsor chairs tables and lamps fireplace and large draped windows. Three large silver-gelatin architectural photographs of the same room from different angles each signed and dated in pencil on the mount "Behrens-Herberger '50." Image size 13⅜ × 10½ in. on original mounts 19½ × 14 in. Condition: clean prints with light edge silver mirroring age-typical for silver-gelatin; mounts evenly toned with darker right/lower margins and minor upper right corner bump/loss; on two mounts. Large architectural photographs of a lodge-style living room-exposed timber ceiling and beams paneled walls with fireplace tiled floor with oval braided rugs a slat-back settee and multiple stick/Windsor chairs tables and lamps-taken in a Busch family residence. View A fireplace & window wall: Beamed ceiling; paneled walls; fireplace with twin sconces; large draped window beyond; slat-back settee stick chairs oval braided rugs; side tables and lamps. View B stone hutch wall: Stone accent wall with lantern sconce; large painted hutch/display cabinet; multiple stick chairs; braided rug foreground; taxidermy mounts above draped windows. View C broad room view: Wide shot from opposite corner showing both seating groups fireplace wall art braided rugs and tiled floor; strongest sense of room layout and circulation. Scholarly Points of Interest: Material Culture & Design: The photographs provide an exhaustive inventory of period-specific American craftsmanship: exposed timber beams slat-back settees Windsor/stick chairs and hand-braided oval rugs. The presence of taxidermy and stone-hutch accents reflects the hunting-lodge aesthetic prevalent among the American industrial elite of the 1950s. Architectural Photography Technique: The Behrens-Herberger studio demonstrates mastery of interior depth-of-field and light-balancing. The use of three distinct perspectives View A B and C provides a 360-degree topographical understanding of the space moving from intimate hearth-side details to broad-room circulation and layout. Elite Provenance: These prints originate from the estate of Elene B. Roberson daughter of August A. Busch Jr. As primary documents of the family's private environment they offer rare insight into the lifestyle and aesthetic preferences of the president of one of America's most significant corporate dynasties. Technical Features: Process: Original silver-gelatin development exhibiting the characteristic tonal range and depth of pre-digital architectural commissions. Artist Attribution: Each mount is hand-signed and dated in pencil by the studio certifying them as original exhibition or archival mounts rather than later commercial reproductions. State: Image size 13⅜ × 10½ inches on original 19½ × 14 inch mounts. Bibliographic & Archival Note: While smaller promotional images or newspaper clippings of Busch family residences may exist these large-scale studio-mounted prints were likely produced as a private commission for the family's own historical record. Their survival as a cohesive triplet is rare. They serve as a fundamental resource for researchers of Mid-Century Interior Design American Industrial Social History and Twentieth-Century Architectural Photography. unknown

1887réf. 1591887. Albumen print; 6 1/2 x 4 inches; With photographer's credit mount recto and Haskell's identification in ink mount recto. An extremely are photograph showing Burnette Haskell a radical California labor organizer alongside James J. Callahan taken in 1887 when both men were working as editors for the Denver newspaper "The Labor Enquirer." Haskell is seated on the left side of the photo. According to the Library of Congress the Labor Enquirer was first printed in 1882 and was "unapologetically socialist." Callahan took over in 1887 and was joined by Burnette later that year. As the L.O.C. writes "Callahan was joined by Burnette G. Haskell who served as the resident editor for about six months. Haskell was formerly associated with 'The Truth' published in San Francisco. Under Haskell's editorship the paper fell afoul of the Knights of Labor who had once championed the Enquirer leading to an all-out boycott of the paper. Haskell returned to California where he began The Kaweah Colony a utopian socialist community located in the Sierra Nevadas. Haskell and his followers lived in the woods under a grove of giant Sequoias including one they named "Karl Marx." The colony officially disbanded in 1892. Deaccessioned from the Bancroft Library thence to the estate of Ron Lerch. unknown
1970réf. 16443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name. 1890réf. 307318Constantinople Istanbul: Probably Sébah and Joaillier 1890. Perhaps the most well-known image from the photographer Pascal Sébah or his son Jean a view outside a Turkish coffee shop of a group of men drinking coffee and smoking. At the center of the image is a seated man with a white beard holding a cup in one hand and the hose of a hookah in the other. A waiter holds a glass-bottomed hookah for him. More men sit on either side of the central figure. However it is a man on the far right of the image staring fiercely at the camera a pipe in his mouth that adds drama to the scene returning the gaze of the viewer. This man and the waiter who are in front of the main row of men also add a nice compositional element dividing the foreground from the background a second image taken on the same day—based on the foliage and the shape of the knot of rope on the cafe wall—lacks these two elements and it is much less successful from an artistic perspective. Adding further interest to the careful view are the ghostly faces of two men inside the cafe who look at the scene through dusty windows. This photograph both documents a part of everyday life for men in Turkey but the subjects return the naked stare of the camera and look across space and time at the viewer of the photograph. It's an image whose meaning is as much about looking as seeing. While this image is titled in the negative it is not signed by the photographer. However other prints of this image are signed Sébah and Joaillier. The placement of that signature not present on this print over the left foot of the staring man suggests this is an earlier printing of the photograph. The quality of the print argues against this being printed from a copy negative. Those facts could argue that this could be an image by the founder of the firm the Turk Pascal Sébah 1823–1886. However Pascal is primarily known for his studio work. His son Jean took over the business and added Polycarpe Joallier as a partner soon after. They are much better known for outdoor street views hence the attribution to Sébah and Joaillier. An image with excellent tonality measuring 10-1/4 by 8-1/8 inches on a 14 by 11-7/8 mount. There is a bit of staining to the lower corners of the mount and the mount is slightly concave but overall this is an exceptional print of one of finest images from the best-known Turkish photography studio of its time. [Probably Sébah and Joaillier] unknown

Autograph and photograph collection album includes tipped in silver gelatin photographs. The inscriptions and autographs are on sepia toned gelatin prints photographs; inscriptions from the performers to Rita Olcott. Inscription and autographs including cast: Thomas A. The original play stars Sir Anthony Absolute fictional character the father of Captain Jack Absolute and with him a protagonist of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comic play The Rivals 1775. Sir Anthony is a wealthy aristocrat and so his son masquerades as the penniless Ensign Beverley in order to court Lydia Languish who has romantic notions of marrying a poor man. When Sir Anthony attempts on his own to arrange a marriage between Jack and Lydia Jack's true identity is revealed to Lydia. On October 30 1925 while playing the role of Sir Lucius O'Trigger in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The Rivals Olcott fell ill and wasn't expected to survive.
