Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. 1887réf. 1591887. Albumen print; 6 1/2 x 4 inches; With photographer's credit mount recto and Haskell's identification in ink mount recto. An extremely are photograph showing Burnette Haskell a radical California labor organizer alongside James J. Callahan taken in 1887 when both men were working as editors for the Denver newspaper "The Labor Enquirer." Haskell is seated on the left side of the photo. According to the Library of Congress the Labor Enquirer was first printed in 1882 and was "unapologetically socialist." Callahan took over in 1887 and was joined by Burnette later that year. As the L.O.C. writes "Callahan was joined by Burnette G. Haskell who served as the resident editor for about six months. Haskell was formerly associated with 'The Truth' published in San Francisco. Under Haskell's editorship the paper fell afoul of the Knights of Labor who had once championed the Enquirer leading to an all-out boycott of the paper. Haskell returned to California where he began The Kaweah Colony a utopian socialist community located in the Sierra Nevadas. Haskell and his followers lived in the woods under a grove of giant Sequoias including one they named "Karl Marx." The colony officially disbanded in 1892. Deaccessioned from the Bancroft Library thence to the estate of Ron Lerch. unknown

1957réf. List1012Nyack: Fellowship of Reconciliation 1957. First Edition. Small 4to 10 ¼ x 6 ¾ and each 16 pp. A fine copy unread with slightest normal tanning but exceptionally preserved overall. Fine. Barry Sy. A year after moving its headquarters from New York City to Nyack New York the Fellowship of Reconciliation - an interfaith group founded in 1915 with pacifist roots - published this an illustrated story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which helped introduce the country to Martin Luther King Jr. The comic was produced by a number of artists under the direction of Al Capp who is best known for L'il Abner. The FoR had a year earlier assigned the white Methodist minister Glenn E. Smiley to assist the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Montgomery bus boycott. Smiley as well as executive secretary and director of publications Alfred Hassler - a prolific anti-war writer - directed the production of this comic book with the help of Capp's studio who assigned the artist Sy Barry to illustrate the work. Dr. King contributed to and endorsed the work himself offering several editorial suggestions. Besides telling the story of King and the boycott the comic introduced the principles of nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. John Lewis cited the work as an inspiration for his three-part graphic novel series March. Through grant funding the FoR was able to produce an initial run of 250000 copies which were distributed through a network of civil rights groups churches and schools. Offered here is a pristine original copy of the first edition distinguishable from later reprints by the presence of a "For Additional Copies Contact:" stamp on the rear cover listing the address of the Philadelphia area FoR office. FoR staff in particular Jim Lawson and Glenn Smiley distributed the comic throughout the south to younger audience members while giving workshops on nonviolence. The FoR produced a second version drawn by a different artist for Latin American audiences. Despite the comic's importance very few original copies have survived we locate no others for sale at the time of this writing. The comic historian and artist Tom Christopher posted an article about it on his website in 2004 which led to a revival in interest and eventually additional reprints and translations. Overall a pristine copy of a very important comic book which helped introduce and define the Civil Rights Movement and its messages of nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. The firm's interest in Gothic Revival led them to stained glass production in the late 1800s in which they then produced windows for churches around the world. These cartoons of windows are finely detailed showing the wide ranges of colors used in production. The two larger cartoons are annotated to indicate corrections of specific color choices. unknown books

1890réf. 307318Constantinople Istanbul: Probably Sébah and Joaillier 1890. Perhaps the most well-known image from the photographer Pascal Sébah or his son Jean a view outside a Turkish coffee shop of a group of men drinking coffee and smoking. At the center of the image is a seated man with a white beard holding a cup in one hand and the hose of a hookah in the other. A waiter holds a glass-bottomed hookah for him. More men sit on either side of the central figure. However it is a man on the far right of the image staring fiercely at the camera a pipe in his mouth that adds drama to the scene returning the gaze of the viewer. This man and the waiter who are in front of the main row of men also add a nice compositional element dividing the foreground from the background a second image taken on the same day—based on the foliage and the shape of the knot of rope on the cafe wall—lacks these two elements and it is much less successful from an artistic perspective. Adding further interest to the careful view are the ghostly faces of two men inside the cafe who look at the scene through dusty windows. This photograph both documents a part of everyday life for men in Turkey but the subjects return the naked stare of the camera and look across space and time at the viewer of the photograph. It's an image whose meaning is as much about looking as seeing. While this image is titled in the negative it is not signed by the photographer. However other prints of this image are signed Sébah and Joaillier. The placement of that signature not present on this print over the left foot of the staring man suggests this is an earlier printing of the photograph. The quality of the print argues against this being printed from a copy negative. Those facts could argue that this could be an image by the founder of the firm the Turk Pascal Sébah 1823–1886. However Pascal is primarily known for his studio work. His son Jean took over the business and added Polycarpe Joallier as a partner soon after. They are much better known for outdoor street views hence the attribution to Sébah and Joaillier. An image with excellent tonality measuring 10-1/4 by 8-1/8 inches on a 14 by 11-7/8 mount. There is a bit of staining to the lower corners of the mount and the mount is slightly concave but overall this is an exceptional print of one of finest images from the best-known Turkish photography studio of its time. [Probably Sébah and Joaillier] unknown
1925réf. 11454New York Buffalo 1925. Unique. Hardcover. Very Good. Unique. Hardcover. George C. Tyler's touring production of "The Rivals." Autograph and photograph collection album includes tipped in silver gelatin photographs. The inscriptions and autographs are on sepia toned gelatin prints photographs; inscriptions from the performers to Rita Olcott. Inscription and autographs including cast: Thomas A. Wise Lola Fisher James T. Powers Fred Eric Chauncey Olcott Percival Vivian May Collins George Tawde Walter Woodall and "Sir Anthony Absolute" dated December 25 1924. "The Rivals comedy in five acts by Richard Brinsley Sheridan produced and published in 1775. The original play stars Sir Anthony Absolute fictional character the father of Captain Jack Absolute and with him a protagonist of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comic play The Rivals 1775. Sir Anthony is a wealthy aristocrat and so his son masquerades as the penniless Ensign Beverley in order to court Lydia Languish who has romantic notions of marrying a poor man. When Sir Anthony attempts on his own to arrange a marriage between Jack and Lydia Jack's true identity is revealed to Lydia. She initially rejects him because of his deceit but she eventually accepts him." On October 30 1925 while playing the role of Sir Lucius O'Trigger in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The Rivals Olcott fell ill and wasn't expected to survive. He eventually recovered but it was the last time he appeared on stage. Almost seven years later Chauncey finally succumbed to his chronic bout with pernicious anemia at his Monaco villa in the early hours of March 18 1932. In 1897 Chauncey married Rita O'Donovan from San Francisco a fellow enthusiast. They collaborated on many plays she was the inspiration for the song that Chauncey wrote "My Wild Irish Rose." She wrote a biography "Song in Her Heart" about her and Chauncey's life which was made into a film "My Wild Irish Rose." Wonderful example of an early 20th century performers dedication album.
