Five blank patient registration forms on fine paper in very good condition. A collection of early 20th century photographs from a well-educated Japanese middle-class family. It is likely that they belonged to the family of a doctor named Tanaka Fusa who had a clinic in Nishio town in the Hazu district of Aichi Prefecture. The photos are accompanied by mid-20th century patient registration forms from Dr. Tanaka's clinic. Three of the photos show large group of women approximately 200 in total and were produced by the Kiyokuan Studio in Kyoto a studio established by Kobayashi Teisuke in 1900. They were most likely female high school students on their school excursion to Kyoto each adopting the same hair style Hisashigami style which was very fashionable among high school girls towards the end of the 19th century. Another family group photo bears the mark of well-known Meiji era Kyoto photographer Hori Masumi 1857-1911. Two later photos are of the wedding in the grounds of Kyoto's Heian Jingu of Ueki Ukichi and his bride Ujiko in May 1929. A Ueda Ukichi is listed as a law student at Kansai University in the early 1920s so this may be the same person. There is an early twentieth century photo of a group of schoolboys each carefully named on the covering tissue and a 1929 photo from a Nagoya studio of a group of dignitaries also individually named on the covering sheet. . unknown

A handsome period album of Scottish topographical photography produced by the celebrated Dundee firm Valentine & Sons one of the three major Scottish commercial studios of the 19th century. Among the views are: Holyrood from Calton Hill Edinburgh Castle and National Gallery Princes Street with Scott Monument Stirling Castle Ben Lomond Forth Bridge Trossachs Pier and Steamer Images are captioned in the negative characteristic of Valentine's production for the middle- and upper-class tourist market. These albums were sold through stationers railway bookstalls and hotels and represent an early commercial system of curated regional photography prior to the postcard era. A well-preserved example of a classic Scottish photographic souvenir volume notable for its strong tonal range and consistent print quality. A 19th-century album of twelve Valentine & Sons albumen views of Scotland including Edinburgh Castle Holyrood the Forth Bridge and the Trossachs-classic compositions by one of Britain's great commercial studios. James Valentine-along with G. W. Wilson-was a foundational figure in Scottish commercial photography; his Dundee studio shaped public visual culture and later became one of the world's major postcard producers. His Dundee studio systematized the photographic depiction of Scottish landscape architecture and tourism shaping how Scotland was visually imagined in the late 19th century. Valentine & Sons helped create the commercial model of curated regional imagery-albums views and series sold through railways hotels and stationers. The firm later became one of the world's major postcard producers meaning these albumen prints represent the pre-postcard phase of mass photographic culture. These views are not isolated artworks but part of an early visual infrastructure of tourism and national identity. Subjects: Albumen Prints; Valentine Studio; Scottish Topography; Tourism History; Architecture Photography; Travel & Landscape; Scottish History; 19th-Century Visual Culture. unknown

Date stamps agency information and paper blurbs attached to two photos. Minor wear with one showing wrinkling at top and bottom blank white margins. Overall near fine. These portraits including one of Hazel Scott at the piano capture her effervescent sassy and charismatic personality which made her a top favorite for radio film and -- what one of the image's attached paper blurb indicates -- star of Café Society Uptown. She performed as the resident pianist/vocalist for five years by 1945 and earned a place at the top of show biz. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago Scott moved to the US and was a child prodigy. The classic and jazz musician became one of America's premier pianists of her time. One portrait announces her marriage to Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Two are agency portraits while the third shows her at the piano. Ivan Scott, New Color Studio
