2007réf. 438030Phoenixville Pennsylvania: Windrose Studio Publications 2007. Unbound. Fine. Small collection of letters and one form including two Autograph Letters Signed one Printed Letter Signed with a "letter from the editors" on the verso one subscription form and one circular advertising Bruckner's new work The Cards of Fra Giovanni. 8½" x 11" or smaller. Fine. A small collection of letters and forms from Pennsylvania artist Peter Bruckner Windrose Studio related to "Community-Supported Art" CSA and anthroposophy. The letters addressed to a 2007 subscriber both thank her for her support and give information on upcoming projects. Included is a printed letter from three of Bruckner's editors extolling his virtue as a storyteller "that has arisen out of the fountainhead of anthroposophy in his soul." It also mentions that Bruckner is currently writing a book on the subject THE ZODIAC PATH: A Contribution to the Ongoing Work with Rudolph Steiner's Waldorf Curriculum. "Community Supported Art" apparently a play on the term "Community Supported Agriculture" finances the creation of art by attracting subscribers who don't mind paying for their art ahead of time. In this case $150 will get you 10 titles over the course of a year or as many as you'd like to purchase individually at $15 apiece. According to Bruckner ".this is not about buying and selling but rather about creating the needed support for this material to become available in print." An unusual sales pitch with a strong spiritual bent. Windrose Studio Publications unknown books

1930réf. 158866New York: Vandamm Studio 1930. Vintage portrait photograph of actor Otto Kruger by the photography team of Florence and Tommy Vandamm Vandamm Studio circa 1930. Photograph with a blind "Vandamm / New York" stamp on the bottom left of the recto and a "Vandamm Studio" stamp on the verso and a label on the verso announcing Kruger in the leading role of the Broadway play "The Boundary Line" by playwright Dana Burnet which premiered at the 48th Street Theatre on February 5 1930 and ran for 37 performances closing in March 1930. The photograph was likely commissioned by the Theatre Guild which contracted Vandamm Studios to photograph all of their productions beginning in 1928. Kruger began his career as a Broadway matinee idol in the 1920s and 1930s before establishing a niche in feature films as the charming villain such as in Alfred Hitchcock's 1942 film "Saboteur" Joseph M. Newman's "711 Ocean Drive" and Douglas Sirk's 1954 film "Magnificent Obsession." Kruger starred in over 80 films between 1915 and 1964 as well as multiple television appearances in the 1950s and 1960s. The husband and wife photography team of Florence and Tommy Vandamm married in 1918 emigrated from London to New York in the 1920s due to declining business in their portrait studio following World War I. By 1928 Vandamm Studio began to dominate the field in New York after being contracted by the Theatre Guild to photograph all of their productions. Florence took responsibility for most of the portrait work while Tommy documented the stage work. The studio was closed by Florence in 1961. Vandamm Studio's work was known for their carefully planned lighting and composition and their attention to detail. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good with two vertical folds and three horizontal folds cropping the face. Vandamm Studio unknown books

Highlights included Valeska Suratt for Fox and Ruth St. Denis in Theatre Magazine. At one time with four branch studios as well as primary in Kansas City. Known for dark half shaded intense prints keen on dramatic negative manipulation yielding profound shadow expression and drama in an era of still repose popularized in portraiture. 1911réf. 216131911. Very Good Minus. The 1911 comedy of manners has a mother and daughter scheming to snag a rich husband with the daughter pretending to be an English aristocrat with great effect until a man comes along threatening to expose her. In the two large photos both 25 by 32 cm not counting margins we see Mrs. Fiske and her mother in the work played by Florine Arnold who was a frequent supporting player in Mrs. Fiske's productions. The margins of the photos are chipped and soiled. None of this intrudes on the photo images. One can see minor crack lines in the photos and these are fairly minor demerits. The photos remain sharp with only a touch of fading despite their age. unknown books

1910réf. BK0065Philadelphia: Murdock Studios 1910. Real photo postcard portrait 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Studio stamp verso reading "Murdock Studio / 4047 Market St. / Philadelphia Pa. / Extra Copies of this Photo can be had at any time. Excellent contrast light wear Near Fine. A particularly attractive studio portrait of an unidentified African American man dressed in a three-piece suit and tie and seated next to a small table with flowers. The photographer Murdock Studio has proven difficult to trace though the address on the verso places the studio at 4047 Market Street near 40th Street in West Philadelphia. The location is interesting in relation to the development of the Black Bottom the predominantly African American neighborhood which extended roughly from 33rd to 40th Streets around the Market Street corridor. The neighborhood grew during the first half of the twentieth century before being largely destroyed during urban renewal in the 1960s. We have not been able to determine whether Murdock Studio was Black-owned or to identify the sitter. A strong example of African American studio portraiture from West Philadelphia during the period.
