Watercolors meas. appx. 110 x 190 mm. one somewhat smaller; on laid paper with no watermark; sheet size appx. 210 x 265 mm. Three are in color one in black and white. Nazareth Hall 17521929 was the Moravian school in Nazareth Pennsylvania. It was established by master mason Melchior Rasp in 1754. In 1759 it became the central boarding school for sons of Moravian parents. Later it attained wide fame as a "classical academy." This eventually led to the founding in 1807 of Moravian College and Theological Seminary at Bethlehem PA. The original school was divided into "rooms"; each contained only fifteen or eighteen pupils; these pupils were under the constant supervision of a master; and this master who was generally a theological scholar was the companion and spiritual adviser of his charges. Jacob Cist graduated at the school and worked with the post office department Washington D. C. 1800-08 when he removed to Wilkes Barre PA. There he was appointed postmaster and retained the position until his death 1825. He devoted much of his time to painting and literature contributing for years to The Literary Magazine The Portfolio and to the local papers of Pennsylvania. He invented and patented a mill to grind colors for paints and in 1808 secured a patent for manufacturing a mineral black for printer's ink from Lehigh anthracite coal as a substitute for India ink. For many years he was interested in the mining and the uses of anthracite coal. In 1815 published a pamphlet on the subject. Ludwig Schweinir has evaded the historical record. unknown books

Gilt stamped on the front cover lower left in large type: Mr. M W O'Brien / "RULES" Lance Thackeray artist and illustrator died of illness in 1916 after having volunteered at age 40 for the Artists Rifles - a volunteer light infantry regiment - during WWI. What is known about his life is found in his biography by Askey. The drawings are charming moments presented in subdued renderings. An exceptional assemblage. Unique hardcover books

About the artist: Jean Auscher 1896-c. 1950 was a 20th century French artist caricaturist and illustrator. Auscher was a pupil at l'Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. His work was exhibited at Le Salon d'Automne and Le Salon des Tuileries between 1923 and 1933. His most characteristic work recorded the life "des Années Folles" in the Paris of the 1920s including scenes in the casinos gambling clubs and dance halls evoking the decadence of the demi-monde. He also recorded the theatrical community with portraits of actors some in their famous roles such as Louis Jouvet as "Le Trouhadec indigne" and the clown Grock. His best-known work appeared in limited edition folios published by the artist himself "La Faune des Dancings" 1925 and "Le Baccara" circa 1926. Many copies of the lithographs contained in these were heightened with watercolor. He contributed to the satirical journal "Le Rire"; he also illustrated works by Irène Némirovsky who was rediscovered when "Suite Française" was republished in 2004. Andre Haguenauer "Les Amertumes" 1925 and Alfred Machard "Printemps Sexuel" provided Auscher with subject matter that was again towards the margins of conventional attitudes to sexuality. rif. 4671PORNOGRAPHIC WATERCOLORS. Album. 9pgs. 7 x 5. No date circa 1950s. Cleveland. A scrapbook of nine pornographic watercolors probably dating from the 1950s. On the back of the last page is a pencil note Drawn by an artist named Ganzman of Cleveland. Without giving away too many details the illustrations concern a relationship between Elsie May and Zeke and the drawings get more obscene as the book progresses. Finally Elsie Mays father a farmer shows up with a shotgun on the last page. Based on the misspellings the artist either wasnt a native English speaker or a poor speller. I do not believe this is the work of a teenage boy. The scrapbook is held together by two clasps and the edges have some wear and folds. unknown books
