An original vernacular souvenir photo album created by an unknown amateur photographer documenting their tour of the famed 1904 St. Louis World Louisiana Exposition World’s Fair using their own camera -- typically after paying an entrance fee as inaugurated at the 1893 Columbia Exposition over 10 years before. The album opens with views of the Palace of Liberal Arts Festival Hall and the fountains Terrace of the States Electricity Palace Education and more. Along with many of the general public fair-goers these photographs reflect a fascination with the ethnological “Human Zoo” exhibits at the Exposition including the Igarrote-Filipino Village with one young child striding in the fore-ground the Philippine Restaurant and view of the Village with huts temple and walled city. Also featured are a few of the Japanese tea garden and pavilion and the Chinese temple exterior and interior. Exceptionally handsome tight first edition of this detailed guide to American participation of this world's fair to end all world's fairs held in Paris between 12 April and 12 November 1900. Like all world's fairs its intention was to celebrate mankind's accomplishments and advances in every field imaginable -- but with the debut of the new century it was felt appropriate to celebrate accomplishments of the preceding century as well. This remarkable copy bears a red-bordered 4½" X 3/4" colophon slip typed in blue tipped to an inner flyleaf noting that "Twenty-five copies of this catalogue have been bound in this form for special distribution. This copy is numbered 11." Recipients of this specially-bound edition were likely important politicos of the day. The name of this special recipient has been giltstamped on the front board: "WILLIAM B. ALLISON SENATOR." From the collection of William B. Allison 1829-1908 the powerful Iowa Republican who as U.S. senator from that state 1873-1908 was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. According to Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics" Allison owned "hundreds of books on government economics history banking finance and the tariff as well as volumes of American and English literature. An omnivorous reader Allison doubtless read most of these volumes if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation. Alexander Hamilton was his guidepost in finance Robert Burns his favorite poet and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' his favorite poem." A superb copy of this rare edition with gilt as fresh and bright as the day applied. Société Anonyme des Imprimieres Lemercier hardcover

Mixed in with the familiar Arts & Crafts material which filled the early expositions including industrially produced glassware metalwork ceramics and more the 1853-54 Exposition served as a vital presentation of American invention and technology including Royal Earl House’s innovative printing telegraph with its piano-style keyboard a Henry Fitz refractor telescope John Whipple’s daguerreotypes shot of the Moon at Harvard College and even a publicity stunt featuring Elias Otis demonstrating his safety elevator by dramatically cutting the rope holding the cage preventing is descent when they deployed. The 1853-54 Exhibition was also vital to the development of iron construction in America including the striking octagonally planned domed structure by Castensen and Gildermeister as well as plans submitted by Paxton Downing & Vaux Bogardus and Hoppin all illustrated here. After the fair closed in November 1854 the New York Crystal Palace sporadically held tradefairs until 1858 when the iron and glass building burned to the ground in less than 30 minutes. This exceedingly scarce original photograph records the site selection inspection by the Lewis & Clark Exposition Board of Directors July 18 1902 the day after the Site Subcommittee had recommended on July 17 1902 that the Board choose City Park for the Exposition site. In fact many different sites were proposed at the meeting including Henry Corbett’s preference for City park while the Ladd interests advocated for a site along Hawthorne Boulevard. Nonetheless the Board adjourned into executive session and as a result of a last minute proposal by Henry Dosch it decided that they would examine the Guild’s Lake site in detail as evidenced by this photograph showing the several board members standing upon the Electric Railway line tracks on the Willamette Heights next to the land proposed for development by the Scottish-American Investment Company. When the Board reconvened after an August hiatus the vote was 6-2 in favor of Guild’s Lake. Robert Livingstone who owned the Scottish-American Investment Company set about with his real estate development partners Russell & Blyth to build a group of Arts & Crafts homes designed by Emil Schacht in the Willamette Heights subdivision which would inspire Portland residential architecture in the decades following the Exposition. Peter Guild 1797-1870 led his family over the Oregon Trail in 1847 lost a herd of cattle to the Oregon Territorial militia during the Cayuse Indian War and eventually homesteaded on Guild’s Lake constructing a large octagon block house which proved to be a very popular Public House and later the site for the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition. 1901réf. 63092Buffalo NY & Chicago IL: Mackson; Lyman 1901. Archive of 46 original albumen photographs sized from 3 x 6 in. up to 4 x 6 in. all of the images smaller than 4 x 5 in. on albumen paper stock many w/ embossed photographer’s stamps several w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative some w/ small rubber stamp at lower fore-edge of verso as well as pencil manuscript annotations identifying subject inventory nos. w/ in negatives of several a few w/ evidence of having been previously mounted a couple w/very slight dog-eared corners 1 w/ closed tear at lower fore-edge a couple w/ image evidencing poor process chemicals still an exceptional group of images. This set of photographs was created by two different Illinois & Missouri photographers at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY -- both of whom had lived and worked in Chicago at the beginning of the 1890’s offering reasonably priced “unofficial” vernacular images of the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair followed by the Pan-American World’s Fair. The fair featured a range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals “A Trip to the Moon” “Cleopatra’s Temple” Henry Roltair’s illusionist show “House upside down” and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. It is sadly largely remembered as the scene of the tragic assassination of President McKinley. Vernacular souvenir photos are quite scarce and these have an unusual sharpness in light of the fact that like the 1893 Columbian all were prevented from bringing in tripods to shoot the Exposition. One of the photographs captures African natives from the Midway’s “African Village” which incorporated Africans from the colonial empires of Great Britain Belgium Germany & France along with participants from Georgia who were “staged” in the “Old Plantation” representing the enslavement of African-Americans in North America. Another Black History exhibit included was the “Negro Exhibit” previously exhibited at the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris depicting the accomplishments of formerly enslaved people and languished at the far back of the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Samuel Lyman 1854-1939 was an intrepid tinkerer junk dealer and photographer who shot souvenir photos for his customers during the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two of his sons Joseph Lyman 1887-1953 and Harry Lyman 1883-1940 became successful photographers in Kansas City MO during the Roaring 20’s. Mackson fl. 1885-1910 immigrated from Russia into Chicago in the 1880’s and operated a small photo studio there until about 1900 before relocating to Kansas City and St. Louis MO during the opening decade of the 20th Century operating photography studios in both cities. Covers slightly rubbed loss of two small fragments in the lower part of the front cover mild silvering but overall a very good album with strong interesting photos. Historically interesting collection of early well-executed photographs documenting the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition PPIE in San Francisco. The PPIE world fair held from February 20 to December 4 1915 celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and highlighted San Francisco’s recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair occupied a 636-acre site along the northern shore now the Marina District attracting around 19 million visitors. It featured numerous grand structures built exclusively for the event most of which were dismantled shortly afterward except for the Palace of Fine Arts which still stands today. The album contains 84 vibrant views of the Panama International Exposition apparently taken by an American tourist during the summer of 1915. About thirty excellent photographs show the main architectural structures of the PPIE including palaces Horticulture Food Products Fine Arts Varied Industries Transportation international pavilions Siam Portugal Canada Netherlands buildings California & Ferry towers Jewels and Italian arches the Setting and Rising Sun and fountains Energy and Earth. Several candid urban scenes vividly portray dressed-up visitors busily strolling through the Court of the Universe and Court of Four Seasons. There are also two interesting portraits likely showing the compiler and his female companion proudly posing with the coveted visitors' medals. Most of the other photos are well-executed close-up views of exhibited statues - the End of Trail Pioneer Mother Prima Mater the Rising Sun Maidenhood Genius of Creation Fountain of Energy the Kiss etc. The album closes with vibrant photographs of the “Joy Zone” showing specially created attractions – Japan Beautiful Creation Ride and The Souvenir Watch Palace of the New Haven Clock Company. The collection also includes a large striking photograph of the Tower of the Sun at night with the inscription "Photo by Eachus! " on its verso. Overall historically interesting album illustrating the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. hardcover
