1609réf. A86ACTMRTZ41Franc end al" = Amsterdam: Frederijck de Vrije" 1609. Disbound. Small 4to. Poems celebrating the truce with Spain though attributed to a former opponent of the truce with the Dutch poems in textura types and Latin marginal notes in roman. A political pamphlet in verse celebrating peace and dated less than a month before the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The main poem takes the form of a "codicil" to War's "last will and testament." It recites the various legacies both good and bad that the War has left to people on both sides and even to people and countries not directly involved in the fighting. Asher mistakenly lists the present pamphlet as no. 11 in the Bye-Korf series: it was published about six months after the Bye-Korf was banned but later collectors often inserted it and the associated Testament in place of the earlier Testament which should have been Asher 26-28/10. The author place of publication and publisher given on the title-page are all word plays "Yemand van Waer-Mond" for example suggesting "someone of honest mouth." The STCN attributes the pamphlet with a query to Nierop who propagandized against peace in one of the Bye-Korf pamphlets Asher 28/37 but rejoiced in it once it came. Alden & Landis attributes the associated Testament ofte Wtersten Wille to Middelgeest. The poet's four-line verse on the back of the title-page is signed with the motto: "Yet Meer en mocht/Min en docht Niet."A nice view of popular feelings about the Truce just before it formally took effect. With some tears at the fold of the outermost bifolium and only slightly browned otherwise a very good copy.l Asher 26-28/11; Knuttel 1584; Simoni W 34; Tiele 751; OCLC WorldCat 3 copies. réf. 52514The sixth thirteenth and seventeenth governor of the Colony of Rhode Island 1676-77 1686 and 1696-98 was the son of an earlier governor from a prominent Quaker family; he was the first native-born governor; he served that colony as deputy governor and in other capacities. ADS 1p 6" X 3" Newport RI 29 1695. Very good. On lightly age toned laid paper and penned in bold iron gall ink that burns through one lower case "o" Clark here records having verbatim "Reseved of Grt. of dartmouth the Some of Six ponds in mony for amount and of John Hussey of hamton I says Reseved by me." Signed large and bold by him at the close and dated from Newport. Challenging to decipher with creative spelling variations typical of the day. It's feasible but far from certain that "John Hussey" may have been the noted Quaker minister and assemblyman Reverend John Hussey 1635-1707 of Hampton New Hampshire whose family had old links to Rhode Island; perhaps coincidentally a John Hussey of Hampton is recorded purchasing large plots of land in Delaware in 1695. An intriguingly early and cryptic item. Autograph material of Clark and other Colony of Rhode Island governors is rarely seen. unknown

Not in Singerman though Robert Singerman himself suggested to us that the text "seems to be a match for the text in the first volume of the American Jewish Year Book 1899/1900 at pp.294-97. Our item does not include any pagination and we would consider it to be a first separate edition. The item not listed in any database we were able to consult. Advertising pamphlet listing imprints of the newly formed Jewish Publication Society including their first "Outlines of Jewish History" by Lady Magnus 1890 through Zangwill’s Dreamers of the Ghetto 1898 which is indicated as “Sold to Members only” probably indicating that it had just come out or perhaps related to copyright issues with Zangwill. Notably absent is any mention of the American Jewish Yearbook which began publication in 1899. All items include a short positive review from the American press. The Jewish Publication Society of America was founded for "’the publication and dissemination of literary scientific and religious works giving instruction in the principles of the Jewish religion’; the third of its kind in the United States see Jew. Encyc. i. 519. Its headquarters are at Philadelphia. It was founded June 3 1888 at a convention held in Philadelphia. At the end of the first fiscal year the membership was 1071; by 1903 it had reached 4700. Every member of the society receives a copy of each publication; since the society has been in existence over two hundred thousand volumes have been distributed and sold. The society is supported by the income derived from a permanent fund and from membership dues. As a rule four sometimes five publications a year are issued; the first 'Outlines of Jewish History' by Lady Magnus appeared in 1890. The society issues two series a 'Special Series' seven numbers appearing occasionally and including short works of a miscellaneous character and 'The American Jewish Year Book' published since 1899-1900 5660.the society has brought out…translations from German French and Hebrew. réf. 38044201Canton 1860-80's Cheungqua. A single pith or Tongcao color painting usual minimal issues clean & solid example brilliantly vivid colors rarely found in such clean & fine condition. A RARE EXAMPLE ! . . . . FINE CHINESE COLOR PITH PAINTINGS . . . SHOWING BEAUTIFULLY DRESSED CHINESE IMPERIAL COURT LADY . . . EXECUTED IN STUNNING & BRILLIANT COLORS . . . AKA: CHINESE EXPORT WATERCOLOURS . A stunning Chinese Imperial Court. She wears a golden-embroidered outer dress with elaborate collar sleeves and hem. She wears pink silk-embroidered pants and her "lotus" bound feet are on a wooden stool. She sits on a Ming dynasty style Huahuali wood chair with a fan in her right hand and silk-embroidered accessory in her left. Adjacent to her is a matching Ming table with three ripe 'You' fruits pommel. . This is a typical studio trade painting" executed by Chinese native artists hand-painted color pith painting for foreign traders visiting Canton or Macao during the early to mid-19th century. . "GOLDEN LOTUS" or "LOTUS FEET" BOUND FEET Chanzu: This like most illustrations of the period show the woman with bound feet peeking out below her pant cuff. Chanzu bound feet was an erotic obsession and fetish in ancient China. The erotic ramifications are outlined in the references below. . DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING ART WORK AND CONDITION: . This painting is in brilliant vivid and stunning colors. Skillfully painted with a fine hand delicate fine-point brush with great detail incredible reality texture and appeal. . As usual this paintings was tipped to a contemporary stiff backing paper card. . This painting is approximately 19.5 x 27.5 cm. . There are a few old mends on the verso the image is not impacted it remains quite solid and very stable. By and large a far and above average excellent example. Suitable for framing and display. . Please review the photograph posted to our website for details. . "RICE PAPER" PAINTINGS: Several authors refer to this name rather than the proper name "Pith" paper paintings also can be called "Tung Tsao." . THE CANTON ARTIST OR 'SCHOOL' OF CHEUNG QUA: Cheung Qua was an export watercolor painter in Canton. He and followers of his school produced various single and albums of these paintings which were sold from his studio. . Often his in-house artists began painting on their own thus replicating the techniques subjects and essence of their masters. Because these paintings were rarely signed the one and only identification ever found was occasionally on the album cover or spine with the studio name. . Often these paintings were sold in various shops in Macao the main resting and gathering place of foreigners during part of the year. . REFERENCE: . CLUNAS Craig.: CHINESE EXPORT WATERCOLOURS. This entire book is devoted to Pith or Rice paper paintings. For musical instruments see color plates on pp.50-53 especially plates on pp.66-67 plates 39 & 40 are particularly similar to our examples that is to say by the same or an artist who was in the same house of Cheungqua or that school. réf. 22058501Tokyo 1930-34 Watanabe. Otanzaku oblong color woodblock print 32.3 x 10.8 cm. artist's Hanko/chop "Seki" in upper in upper right corner else unsigned probably a 'knock-off' of Shotei's famous "Izumibashi No Ame" cleansolid example. . . . . A STRANGE VERY EXAMPLE ! . . . "OTANZAKU" LARGE OBLONG COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT . . . MOST LIKELY A PERIOD "KNOCK-OFF" OF A . . . TAKAHASHI HIROAKI HIROAKI FAMOUS PRINT OF IZUMI BASHI . . . IZUMI BRIDGE ON A SNOWY NIGHT . . . A MAN HOLDING A LANTERN LEADS A KIMONO-CLAD WOMAN . . . OVER THE BRIDGE WHILE BOTH HOLD OIL-SKIN UMBRELLAS . . This unusual example is more than likely a "knock-off" of a famous print illustrated in Stephens of remarkably and very similar print by Takahashi Shotei Hiroaki executed after 1923 with title: "IZUMIBASHI NO AME RAIN ON THE BRIDGE IZUMI BASHI" The original published in Tokyo by Watanabe. See below for details. . THE SUBJECT OF THE INSPIRATION FOR OUR EXAMPLE: The male servant of a Geisha leads her across the Izumi Bridge on a rainy night while holding a paper lantern. He wears no shoes which is exceptionally strange for all Japanese wear at least Wara Zori rice straw sandals even the poorest of the poor can make from straw way-side straw. . The two people subjects bend towards the blowing snow storm he with a half-open oil-skin paper umbrella she with a wide open umbrella fighting to keep the umbrella steady. . ARTIST SEAL & TITLE: The artist's name is not found on the print. There is however the artist's red cinnabar Hanko/seal/chop reading "Seki" fount at the top right corner. . "Seki" is an elusive artist who is not listed in a the usual standard reference resources on the period and genre of Shin Hanga examples. . This exact seal is also found on our print again by "Seki" our book number 220584. listed on our website. . WHO WAS SEKI: This artist and name are a complete mystery and there are no references to him in the record. This may very well be a spuriously name used to hide the true identity of a plagiarizer seeking to take advantage of the famous Shotei. If any reader of this listing has more information on him we would be very grateful to hear from you. An alternate reading of Seki Kanji is "Kan." . OUR EXAMPLE: The first indication to us that this was not an original print but a poor copy of the original and well-known example by Takahashi Shotei Hiroaki 1871-1945: IZUMI BASHI NO AME: RAIN ON THE IZUMI was when we examined the foot wear of the man-servant. He was barefooted and did not even wear 'wara zori' sandals made of rice straw which is something every poverty-stricken Japanese of the Edo period was capable of doing by collecting road-side grass or rice straw. These could be made quickly and only for the effort. It is inconceivable that any Japanese regardless of how poor would be out walking during a snow storm on snow without any foot gear at all!. . This was a strong indication the print was bogus. While the artist "Seki" who's cinnabar-red Hanko seal/chop adorns the upper right corner after exhaustive search of the usual references we could find no reference to this artist's name nor to the Hanko. . A STUDY PIECE: Regardless of the above this example has interesting points and is worthy of study and a good source for a variant on the original work. . Color scans are posted to our website. . Otanzaku oblong color woodprint 32.2 x 107 cm. very good faint center fold artist cinnabar red seal exceptionally clean a bright copy obscure work seldom found excellent registry & impression. RARE EXAMPLE! . . . . AN OBSCURE EVENING VIEW OF YANAGI BASHI IN TOKYO . . . A "OTANZAKU" OBLONG PRINT FORMAT . . . BY "SEKI" . This "shadow" print was done after dark at the famous Yanagi Bashi Willow Bridge in Tokyo. . This fine print shows two willow trees along the river with the bridge in the foreground. A Kimono-clad Japanese woman holds a lantern to light the way as she walks towards the bridge. . A tall bamboo fire-watchtower is outlined against the dark grey-black sky that gradually goes into a deep green as it touches the earth. . Several small houses show lighted windows their lights reflect on the river waters. . A single lonely lantern post marks the entrance where the bridge begins. . Another similar bridge is visible in the background on this moonless night. . ARTIST SEAL & TITLE: The artist's name is not found on the print. There is however a title written in two black Kanji reading "Yanagi Bashi." Printed over the title is the artist's red cinnabar Hanko/seal/chop reading "Seki." Found at the bottom center of the print. . "Seki" is an elusive artist who is not listed in a the usual standard reference resources on the period and genre of Shin Hanga examples. . WHO WAS SEKI: This artist and name are a complete mystery and there are no references to him in the record. This may very well be a spuriously used name to hide the true identity of a plagiarizer seeking to take advantage of the famous Shotei. If any reader of this listing has more information on him we would be very grateful to hear from you. An alternate reading of Seki Kanji is "Kan." . The artwork is similar to and reminiscent of Tsuchida KOITSU 1870-1949 who was master of the dusk evening and night prints. . His skill is unquestioned when it comes to drawing and painting such difficult scenes. The overall effect is stunning and skillful his use of dark colors produces a true-to-life image of dusk and evenings. Very few artists could portray such difficult scenes at this level of expertise. . The subject of this print Yanagi Bashi is quite similar in construction to another "OTANZAKU" size by Takahashi Shotei Hiroaki found in Stephens. See our example book number 220585 posted to our website under the same author's name. . In this example the bridge is reminiscent of the Yanagi Bashi or the other unnamed bridge in the background of our example. See Stephens below. . CONDITION: This unusual size print oblong print has excellent impression and registry. There is as usual a mild center fold common to "OTANZAKU" prints of this grand length of 32.2 cm. . The verso is very clean with ample "Baren" marks a fresh clean & obscure example. . Color scans are posted to our website. . REFERENCES: .
