Eppure, se ci si riflette, non si può negare che dal Rinascimento a oggi la moda ha esercitato sulla civiltà occidentale una grandissima influenza, conquistando alla sua causa un numero crescente di ambiti della vita moderna, fino a diventare per noi quasi una «seconda natura». Tutti, quotidianamente, facciamo esperienza della moda: quando compriamo qualcosa, quando scegliamo come vestirci, quando sfogliamo una rivista o entriamo in una galleria d'arte. E allora, come scrive Lars Fr. H. Svendsen, un'analisi filosofica del significato della moda - della sua insaziabile ricerca del «nuovo», dei meccanismi della sua diffusione, della sua relazione con il corpo e il linguaggio, del suo status di merce e di arte e, non da ultimo, del suo ruolo come ideale di vita - ci può aiutare a conoscere meglio noi stessi, le nostre radici e la società che ci circonda.
