Mode betrifft, interessiert und beeinflußt jeden, auch den, der vorgibt, von der Mode unabhängig zu sein. Deutlicher als in anderen Ausdrucksformen offenbart sich Mode als Sprache - vergleichbar Wörtern und Texten. Ihren Sinn muß man er-lesen, zusammenfügen, neu herstellen, es gibt ihn nicht von vornherein als etwas ein für allemal Feststehendes. Die Perspektive des Lesers ist die eines Beobachters, der Mode als Spiel der Möglichkeiten der Sinne kennenlernt und begreift. Wer sich anzieht, muß sich gezwungenermaßen auch wieder ausziehen oder wird ausgezogen (im wörtlichen wie im übertragenen Sinn). Man präsentiert sich in dem, was man für sein wahres oder besseres Wesen hält. Was immer aber damit ausgedrückt werden soll, es möchte doch niemand nur nach seiner Kleidung beurteilt werden - es soll vielmehr mit ihr etwas zum Ausdruck gebracht werden.
