1998réf. 27481New York:: Metropolitan Museum of Art 1998. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. Cubism and Fashion demonstrates how the fundamental traits of Cubist art were translated into fashion during the critical years from 1908 into the early 1920s and how Cubism has continued to influence designers even to the present. This volume by juxtaposing art and fashion shows how many of the most glittering and elegant dresses of the teens and twenties benefited from Cubist concepts. Significantly this book does not extol rudimentary drawings for apparel by Cubist artists but rather presents a critical study of the most accomplished creations by Poiret Vionnet Chanel and other premier designers who assimilated Cubist principles. Here their work is shown next to art works by Georges Braque Robert Delaunay Juan Gris Fernand Léger Pablo Picasso and other seminal artists of the early twentieth century. Martin argues that the influence of Cubism has been at least as powerful for fashion as it has been for bringing about a new way of seeing in the fine arts. During the teens fashion made its transformation from a full rounded static and exaggerated shell built on the human body to a soft dynamic cylinder revealing the body and reveling in flatness. Includes 147 illustrations of which 132 are in color. Metropolitan Museum of Art, unknown
réf. 022736New York: No publisher. Unbound. Good. no date presumed early to mid 1960s based on zip code and letter prefix for the phone number. Single sheet printed on both sides. 8 ½ by 11 inches. Perhaps published by Ebony Magazine as a promotion for their Ebony Fashion Fair. The flyer does mention "Ebony Super-Star Models" but the actual magazine or the name "Ebony Fashion Fair" does not appear on this flyer leading us to wonder if this was some competing fashion fair that was launched. A flyer for a one day fashion show dance and carnival held at the Hotel DiPLOMAT in New York presumably in the 1960s. The flyer touts models from Jamaica Trinidad Puerto Rico China Africa Barbados Nassau and South America. Over 100 original designs were featured and prizes were awarded for "the freakiest outfit." A large photo of a model featured on the left side of the page. The reverse is a call for female and male models wanted for the Miss Ebony International Fashion Show with some illustrations of models and an entry form at the bottom. The Ebony Fashion Fair if this flyer is associated with it was founded in 1958 by Eunice Johnson of the Johnson Publishing Company. The fair raised money for African American charities and was responsible for founding a cosmetic line for people of color after meeting resistance from the major cosmetic companies. GOOD condition. Heavy toning along the bottom portion with otherwise minor general toning. Two horizontal fold creases present. No publisher unknown
