DE HAVILLAND WITH HIS SIGNED AND DATED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER VERSO. Reginald Saumarez de Havilland ('Havvy'), Assistant Master at Eton, played a fundamental role in the development of the school's boating prowess. In 1892 he succeeded Donaldson as coach of the famous 'Eton Eight' and in the following year replaced the Eight's previously characteristic short, sharp stoke with a much longer draw on a sliding seat. He presented his ideas (and much else) n the standard work 'Elements of Rowing' (Eton, 1913). Lyte's standard history was first published in 1875 and successively updated and re-issued in 1889 and 1899. A magnificent copy in virtually fine state.
1991ref. 3551San Francisco: Alex Wofsy Fine Arts 1991. Later edition. Reprint authorized by the trustees of J.R. Abbey and Dawsons. Four folio volumes measuring 310 x 232 mm. Faux leather with gilt to spines all in Fine jackets. Collating xx 399; xxi 428; xiii 299; xiv 301-675: complete including 633 illustrations. A pleasing set in all. Drawing from his own collection Major J. R. Abbey producied the following representation of landscape and architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. "I have for over a quarter of a century been collecting books on the Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland illustrated with aquatints or lithographs published between the years 1775 and 1860. In this Bibliographical Catalogue the word 'Scenery' is not strictly confined to landscape but includes architecture and urban and social scenes. I have found it a fascinating subject and a field in which there seem to have been few serious collectors. Many of the illustrations are of real beauty and the fact that a large number are from books of the greatest rarity and therefore known to few in their original form gives added significance to those which are reproduced in this catalogue. It is perhaps true to say that the thirty-five plates are a microcosm of the English scene as well as showing something of the social life of the period. Alex Wofsy Fine Arts unknown

18168vo., First Edition, some very minor spotting (mainly marginal); original grey-blue boards, vellum back, paper label lettered in manuscript (a little chipped and faded), uncut, a remarkably crisp, clean copy. A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO JOSEPH STORRS, WITH THE FORMER'S HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. With 2pp of publisher's advertisments of other works (including the revised edition of Hoyland's 'Epitome of the History of the World') bound in at end. John Hoyland (1750-1831), Quaker, writer on gipsies and author of other works, wrote this seminal study as a result of 'observing the very destitute and abject condition of the Gipsy race in the counties of Northampton, Bedford and Hertford'. The work is based on that of Grellman. For further details on Hoyland, his temporary disassociation with Quaker society (due apparently to his romantic entanglement with a gipsy girl) and his involvement with gipsies in general, see DNB. PRESENTATION COPIES FROM HOYLAND ARE RARE. A SPLENDID COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL WORKS ON GIPSIES EVER WRITTEN.
