Surveying Dept. for Supt. Barber in pencil on verso. Recent black cloth post-binder brass screw posts stamping on front cover NF collection of photos. This revealing set of original photographs provide essential details of the stages of construction for the extraordinary Westchester-Biltmore Country Club. Bowman sought to create the quintessential 1920’s sportsman’s oasis easily reached by automobile or train from Manhattan which along with mechanics maids servers and gardeners eventually featured 45 holes of golf three polo fields bridle path horse racing track tennis courts and a casino. The images open with finishing the footings and foundation in Dec. 1920 with structural steel quickly arising by Dec. 30 1920. The photos show the massive winged structure taking shape steel i-beams set in place and stone and masonry facade installed in stages through August 1921. As shown in many of these photos the project moved quickly enough that the roof had been mostly completed and the facade finished by Jan. 1922 with a series showing snow-covered parking lot and scaffolds still carrying material up the side as the wings were finished staircases enclosed so that by April 1922 the main construction has been completed except for some work in the portico front entrance and finishing touches of masonry and architectural details. Fitzgerald’s Gatsby would have felt more than at home with the finished Club amidst the saltwater pool man-made lagoon 800 bathhouses and dance floor with the total build cost for the project exceedingly $ 6 million in 1922 or $ 100 million currently. réf. PE72Folio ca. 25.5 x 33.5 cm or 10 x 13 in. 39 cardstock leaves eight blank. 179 mounted gelatin silver photographs six ca. 25 x 20 cm 9 ¾ x 7 ¾ in the rest from ca. 13.5 x 9.5 cm 5 ¼ x 3 ¾ in to 6 x 6 cm 2 ¼ x 2 ¼ in. Five images captioned in negative. Period green cloth album fastened with string with gilt-tooled generic title “Scrap book.” Front cover partially detached from stub and repaired with tape; several mounts slightly waved; a couple of photos mildly faded but overall a very good album of interesting photos. A collection of photographs showing the Philippines shortly after World War II. The album was compiled by George Barber an American architect or engineer employed with the architecture firm Weihe Frick and Kruse. Weihe Frick and Kruse was established in 1941 and dissolved in 1964 and based in San Francisco California. After World War II the firm was contracted to design troop housing in the Philippines. Barber was likely part of these efforts and lived at Clark Air Base during this time. Clark Air Base built in 1903 was an American air base until 1991. It was a key base during World War II and the Vietnam War. After 1991 the base was given to the Philippines and now operates as Clark International Airport. Over 25 photographs are related to Weihe Frick and Kruse. A large group photo shows the architects and engineers working for the firm at Clark Air Base. Several photographs show employees working at their desks and at construction sites. There are also photographs showing structures at Clark Air Base and the Ayala Bridge Post Exchange. Several photographs are views of the destruction of Manila including the ruins of the Manila Post Office and the Legislative Building and buildings reading “Terminal Building” and “UST Restaurant.” Over 25 photographs are snapshots of street scenes and portraits of Filipinos. Of note are two photographs showing a parade and several scenes of rural life including people riding an oxen-drawn cart. Other photographs in the album show the compiler’s journey across the Pacific and the docking of the ship he took where a gangway reads “52nd Trans. Med Port – Transportation Services Philippines.” They also show snapshots of the compiler and his friends at leisure. There are also several pieces of ephemera in the album originating from the Philippines. They include the compiler’s Philippine driver’s license a list of Filipino employees of Weihe Frick and Kruse and mementos from and invitations to parties. Overall an interesting collection of photographs showing reconstruction efforts in the Philippines after World War II. hardcover
1908réf. 106072Brisbane: Flavelle Roberts and Sankey 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Brisbane Flavelle Roberts and Sankey 1908. Small octavo 114 2 recto blank with the device of the printers Outridge Printing Co. on the verso pages. Original olive-green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine 'Noble Opal' and the author's surname and front cover the full title; cloth slightly marked and lightly rubbed at the extremities; top edge endpapers and adjacent leaves a little foxed; an excellent copy. Flavelle's Gem Series Number 1. This copy is inscribed and signed to 'C.C. Brittlebank with kind regards from Sydney B.J. Skertchly. Corinda Qld. 6.3.08'. Sydney Skertchly 1850-1926 arrived in Brisbane in 1891 after a successful career as a geologist in places as varied as the Fenland and East Anglia Egypt California Burma and China. In 1895-97 he was assistant government geologist in the Geological Survey of Queensland; he was President of the Royal Society of Queensland in 1898 and a founder and first president of the Field Naturalists' Club in 1906 the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' entry on Skertchly is most informative without mentioning this publication. The author's end-note to the reader states that the publishers 'asked me to write a series of little books on gemstones and gave me an entirely free hand. As this the first of them shows they will not be mere gatherings from other harvests but original works embodying the results of my own experience'. An early rare and important work on the subject and we know of no other volumes in the Flavelle's Gem Series. The inscription and signature date from what appears to be the month of publication reviews begin to appear in Queensland newspapers from 10 March 1908. Charles Clifton Brittlebank 1862-1945 the recipient of this copy was a notable mycologist and natural history illustrator. Among many original papers on geology and plant diseases Brittlebank's work includes the illustrations to French's 'Destructive Insects of Victoria' 1891-1911 Archibald Campbell's 'Nests and Eggs of Australian Birds' 1901 and many of the works of Daniel McAlpine whom he succeeded as Vegetable Pathologist to the Department of Agriculture in Victoria. This copy also carries the later pencilled ownership signature of Edward Edgar Pescott 1872-1954 horticulturalist naturalist author and bibliographer. We currently have for sale two unsigned copies of this item sourced from a significant collection on the subject. They prove the existence of distinctly variant issues: one contains an unnumbered advertising leaf for 'Queensland the Queen of the Colonies' verso blank tipped in at the rear the other is printed on textured and coarser paper resulting in a noticeably thicker volume 14 mm as distinct from 11 mm. This signed copy is yet a third variant: while it is printed on the better-quality paper it does not contain the additional advertising leaf and it was clearly never present.
