First editions thus of these exceedingly scarce General Electric sales catalogues containing price lists sales brochures sales information and technical instructions for salesmen to retail appliance department stores hardware stores and electrical utilities across America detailing to their potential customers the home and commercial refrigerator possibilities for better preserving foodstuffs and providing cool water and ice cream. General Electric during the opening years of the Great Depression launched themselves to the top of the fast expanding refrigeration and electrification movement as they transitioned to their Monitor Top refrigerator as well as introducing their “Thermocraft” insulation material which significantly reduced weight per cubic foot and allowed them to easily out-compete their main competitors including Westinghouse and Maytag. These Monitor-top refrigerator units were marketed widely with an ad campaign emphasizing the sanitary white enamel finish on steel that “simplifies housekeeping and safeguards health” for the family built as one air-tight units for both home and commercial uses operating relatively quitely and protecting the food inside from unwanted bacteria and decay. The name Monitor-Top derives from the refrigeration unit’s resemblance to the turret on the Civil War battleship the USS Monitor and would become the bestselling refrigerator over the next decade. The Salesman’s Handbook emphasizes how the interest on the money invested in an electric refrigerator is less than the average price paid by a consumer for ice deliveries for antiquated “Iceboxes” as well as emphasizing just how much food can be stored in them ice made inside the units and how invaluable they are for keeping healthy milk and dairy products at the proper temperatures.
