Printed by Harrison Jehring & Co London. Octavo 220x140mm medium blue cloth printed boards vi98pp : A⸠B-E⸠Fâ´ Gâ¸. Boards lightly soiled edges lightly worn; end papers offset toned. ¶ A practical manual for the manufacture of liqueurs by the addition of flavourings natural or artificial to spirit rectified or distilled. Precise recipes are provided for commercial quantities of tinctures colourings ethers etc. There are also recipes for artificial spirits i.e. rectified spirit alcohol enhanced with flavours to create artificial rum brandy cognac whisky etc. In the preface Gaskell notes the British consumer's preference for imported wines and liqueurs and seeks to improve the British production of liqueurs etc. and by implication reducing the importation from Europe by providing detailed instructions using pure ingredients. Whilst the processes described for making generic liqueurs and cremes conform with current commercial production some of the other practices recommended don't. For example the chapter on wines discusses how to flavour carbonated white wine with syrups essences and ethers to taste like Bollinger Mumm or Veuve Cliquot. Apart from an advertisment to the rear by the author a doctor of chemistry offering to supply the necessary ingredients for compounding wines spirits and liqueurs the author's background is unknown.
