VG/VG- dj chipped soiled; pps agetoned; VERONELLI Luigi 1926 - 2004 The Wines of Italy: wines vermouths brandies & liqueurs. Rome : Canesi Editore undated circa 1964. First Edition English. Printed by Visigalli-Pasetti arti grafiche Rome. Issue price £8. Octavo 250x170mm illustrated colour dust jacket blue boards 32662pp Eighty-four tipped in original Italian wine & spirits labels. Dust jacket edges chipped small loss to corners and spine head faintly soiled; endpapers lightly offset toned faintly foxed; pages agetoned. Internally crisp and clean. ¶ There are three parts to the work. First introductory comments and advice on oenology wine tasting and wine and food pairing. The commentary is lyrical amusing yet very informative. Second a concise alphabetical listing of the wines by Region sub-region and then grape variety beginning with Piedemont; some 250 entries in all. For each listing Veronelli provides a concise summary of the vinification style presumably the DOC rules and ageing and tasting observations. And third a selection of original eighty-four labels from significant wines spirits and liquors. The first significant book on Italian wine in English. Still relevant and useful today. Veronelli was an Italian gastronome wine critic self-proclaimed anarchist poet provocateur television presenter writer and publisher. One of the world's great wine intellectuals of the twentieth century Veronelli was the first and probably remains the most influential Italian wine communicator to date. He was the 'mid-wife' of many of the great Italian wines and wine estates today encouraging their establishment and promoting their output. "He can be credited with the discovery and identification of many of Italy's better producers in the late twentieth century a role which won him a group of devoted friends and an equally large group of sworn enemies mostly large commercial producers". ¹ In 1956 he established a publishing house dedicated to Italian gastronomy philosophy and politics issuing several magazines including Il Gastronomico. He also published D'Annunzio Marquis de Sade Carnacina and a range of eclectic titles. Veronelli closed his publishing house in the 1960s due to poor sales and devoted the next decades to writing books a television career and promoting Italian wine beginning with this work. Scarce particularly in this condition. A very good copy. § This and the parallel US edition widely held in the USA; other holdings this edition Rome Toronto Brock University of NSW Swedish National Library and Oxford Brookes. § Gabler 42322 erroneously suggesting a date of 1950; cf Noling p 424 US edition. ¹ Robinson Jancis & Ors. He emigrated from Britain in 1859. In 1861 he wrote this series of articles for the Adelaide Advertiser. The articles provide an excellent primary resource for the history of the ownership and establishment of nearly fifty early and significant vineyards of South Australia including Auldana Yealumba sic Clarendon Pewsey Vale and Reynella Farm. Ward presciently opined that South Australia would become "one of the most important wine countries of the world." The articles were then reprinted in pamphlet form and 2000 copies were purchased by the Government for free distribution at the 1862 Great Exhibition in London. Rare in the original scarce in this format. He emigrated from Britain to Melbourne in 1859 and began working for The Age newspaper. He then moved to South Australia and in 1861 he wrote a series of articles for the Adelaide Advertiser on the vineyards and orchards of South Australia. In 1864 he returned to Melbourne and undertook a similar commission for The Age writing a series of articles on a number of the vineyards of Victoria. The articles provide a valuable and unique account of the emerging pre-phylloxera Victorian wine industry with descriptions of the founders of the Geelong Western District Ballarat and Bendigo. The series is incomplete as neither the Yarra Valley nor Sunbury are mentioned; perhaps because Ward returned to South Australia to take up a new position. Unlike the South Australian articles the Victorian articles were apparently not published in pamphlet form. Scarce.
