Kingsley Amisone of English literature's most versatile craftsman is also a master of the art of drinking. From his many years of experience and with an eye both to economics and to enjoyment he presents this witty and masterly informative handbook for the drinker amateur and professional. From a guide to alcoholic literature he moves to a selection of prime drink recipes - the fruit of untold years' research in the field. Among his list can be found personal extravaganzas like the Lucky Jim and the Kingers and such irresistibly titled brews as Reginald Bosanquet's Golden Elixir and Evelyn Waugh's Noonday Reviver. Practical guidance on equipment and the store cupboard is followed by a wealth of information about wine including a Wine Shopper's Guide and incidental intelligence on drinking abroad. On a less serious noteKingsley Amis gives us the riotous Mean Sod's Guide 'Vital requirement: prepare pre- and post-dinner drinks in some undiscoverable pantry or broom cupboard'. He has thoughtfully included a section on dealing with The Hangover suggestions for a Boozing Man's Diet and finally for those for whom prevention is better than cure some notes on How Not to Get Drunk. With its apt and highly amusing drawings by Nicolas Bentley this book is an ideal gift for the drinking man of whatever pocket or preference it is as pleasing as a well-made cocktail. Nicolas Clerihew Bentley 1907-78. Born Highgate London. Son of E.C. Bentley the novelist leader writer for The Daily Telegraph and inventor of the four-line verse form known as the 'clerihew'. Studied at University College SchoolLondon and at Heatherley's School of Art. Before and after WW1 during which he was deputy director of the Home Intelligence Unit and editor in the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information he worked freelance as a journalist author and humorous illustrator. Director of Andre Deutsch from 1950. Drew the daily pocket cartoon for The Daily Mail 1958-62. An editor for Sunday Times Publications Ltd. 1962-3 and for Thomas Nelson & Son 1963-7. Nicolas Bentley's illustrations for Belloc's 'New Cautionary Tales' as successor to B. T. Blackwood established his importance as an illustrator. His stylish witty and economical drawings often depicting figures without background or setting owed much to his admiration for the work of the French draughtsman Caran D'Ache and the Swede Olaf Gulbransson. Elected FSIA 1946 and the FRSA 1974. Want more Kingsley AMIS titles For similar and other available fiction and non-fiction titles - please search my MODERN FIRSTS and MODERN FIRSTS2 catalogues. 1985réf. 12908Santa Rosa CA: Graphic Concepts 1985. Cartoon map of California wine country 22.25 x 17 inches eight panel brochure on verso. Folded minor creasing and wear short separations along a couple of fold lines. Good plus condition. A rare and display-worthy map of California wine country depicting over a hundred wineries across four different counties: Lake Mendocino Napa and Sonoma. Small illustrations show many of the most recognizable structures atop an otherwise stylized road map and nondescript scenery. The map shows the area from Redwood Valley south to Petaluma then west to Mill Creek and east to Pope Valley with illustrations denoting such award-winning wineries as Parducci Korbel Charles Klug and Chateau Montelena along with more popular makers such as Mondavi Sutter Home and Berlinger. Chateau Montelena is most famous for its Chardonnay which won the white wine section of the "Judgement of Paris" wine competition. The verso includes a detailed table with winery information organized alphabetically by county. The map was designed and illustrated by Ron Morales and published in Santa Rosa California by Graphic Concepts in 1985. Graphic Concepts unknown
1989réf. 12906Santa Rosa CA: Graphic Concepts 1989. Broadsheet cartoon map 22.25 x 16.75 inches with printed information on verso intended as a brochure but in this case unfolded. Some dampstaining along bottom portion mostly visible on verso with old tape at each corner of verso from previous mounting likely removed from a wall or bulletin board long ago. Otherwise minor wear. Good plus. Rolled. A lovely illustrated map of Napa Valley highlighting one of the region's most distinctive and iconic characteristics -- its robust viticulture industry. Numerous vineyards and wineries dot the fertile valley epitomized by an idyllic scene in the upper right corner. Notable names include Robert Mondavi Charles Krug Beringer Stag's Leap Sutter Home and Charles Shaw the source of Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck". The design and layout were executed by Ron Morales with artwork by Susan Clifford. This is one of several similar wine maps created by Morales though the emphasis on Napa Valley is an uncommon characteristic. The notice in the bottom margin reads "Copyright 1989 by Graphic Concepts" of Santa Rosa California. Charts on the verso lists the wineries by county and their various amenities and operating hours as well as local accommodations entertainment restaurants and so forth. This work was intended to be folded as a brochure for easy transport but the current example was never folded; it was likely posted at a winery or local business in Napa Valley and taken off the wall at some point. OCLC records just two copies of this delightful map fit for the wall of any wine enthusiast at the Library of Congress and the University of Utah though it is difficult to believe copies don't reside at various California especially northern California institutions. réf. 3727800New York: The New York Exchange for Woman’s Work 1940. 72pp. Booklet. Illustrated stiff paper covers; metal spiral bound. Ads. Some water staining at tail end in gutter; else very good. Recipes and menu suggestions from the Woman’s Exchange Restaurant founded in New York City in 1919. The restaurant was an outgrowth of the Woman’s Exchange a charitable group established to sell handcrafted goods made by “gentlewomen in reduced circumstances.”¹ The cookbook includes a wide variety of menus and recipes suitable for luncheon dinner “Sunday Supper” and even has “Hot Weather Suggestions” such as cold soups egg salad and cold meat fowl and fish. With ads for restaurants and purveyors of fine foods. When the restaurant closed in early 1980 one patron wistfully recalled: “Thank heavens for the Woman’s Exchange which served ‘good food’ in ‘attractive surroundings’ to ‘a nice class of people.’”² Here in this 1940 pre-WWII cookbook however “the ladies who lunch” were on the rise. Women of the upper classes had not yet joined the workforce in great numbers. By the 1970s and 1980s that situation would change dramatically. Notes. 1. and 2.
