Questo interessante capitolo tratto da "The Silverado Squatters" 1883, (opera di Stevenson, memorie di viaggio della sua luna di miele durata due mesi) fornisce alcune interessanti descrizioni della California durante la fine del XIX secolo. Stevenson utilizza il primo telefono della sua vita, lungo la costa della California incontra un certo numero di produttori di vino che cominciavano a sperimentare la viticoltura nella "Napa valley", fra cui anche il più vecchio viticoltore della valle, Jacob Schram, che aveva sperimentato per 18 anni la viticoltura nel suo Schramsberg Winerye. In fair condition on aged and lightly-worn paper. The recto of the first leaf is headed by a 6.5 x 8 cm engraving of the Red Lion Inn. Beneath this is an advertisement in the form of a letter from 'NATHANIEL WEGG' to 'Sir or Madam' addressed from 'RED LION EAST STREET GREENWICH. July 1841.' He states that he has 'repurchased the business lately carried on by Mr. GOSLING' and recommends his 'STOCK OF WINES which was laid in by me at my commencement in business in December 1838 and which for selection and flavour may safely defy competition'. He continues by talking up 'the remainder of my Stock consisting of BRITISH AND FOREIGN SPIRITS GENUINE MALT LIQUORS &c.' The recto of the second leaf carries in double column an attractive price list of 'Wines' 'Spirits' and 'Choice Old Spirits in sealed Bottles' including at £1 3s 0d a dozen and 2s a bottle 'Wegg's celebrated Rock Gin'. At the end of the list: 'Bottled Ales Stout Cyder and Perry in the highest pefection. THE TRADE SUPPLIED ON THE MOST LIBERAL TERMS. Goods sent within five miles free of expence. N. B.
