Fine letter full of torment in which Gustave Doré dreads being supported again for the rank of officer in the Legion of Honor he who was made chevalier in 1861 after the publication of Dante's Inferno and thanks to Paul Dalloz's intervention. Doré thanks him moreover for this past influence: ""Je viens te remercier encore et du plus profond de mon cur de l'amitié toute dévouée que vous m'avez témoignée dans ces dernières circonstances ; et je t'assure que je te conserve pour ce fait des sentiments aussi reconnaissants que pour le service que tu m'as si spontanément et cordialement rendu il y douze ans."" ""I come to thank you again and from the depths of my heart for the devoted friendship you have shown me in these recent circumstances; and I assure you that I preserve for this fact feelings as grateful as for the service you rendered me so spontaneously and cordially twelve years ago."" He nevertheless asks him not to propose him for the rank of officer: ""Mais je viens réclamer de toi les mêmes amitiés te priant te suppliant même de t'arrêter complétement et absolument ce qui je n'en doute pas te coûtera plus encore qu'autre chose. ""But I come to claim from you the same friendships asking you even begging you to stop completely and absolutely which I do not doubt will cost you more than anything else. I have thought much about everything you told me yesterday and I find that I was quite wrong to let you engage so obligingly in these steps."" 1872Best.-Nr. 47109London: Grant & Co. 1872. First edition. Folio. xii 191 1 pp. Contemporary wine red full morocco spine with raised bands gilt lettered direct to one panel and decorated to the others gilt lettering to the upper board also marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Frontispiece second title and 52 plates with captioned tissues plus illustrations in the text loosely inserted is an original drawing measuring roughly 23 x 15 cm mounted on card the margins captioned in pencil in an early hand "Doré in London" further pencilled annotations on the card verso. Some uneven discolouration to the covers rubbing to the extremities an attractive copy overall. The loose illustration has the initials "WP" to the lower right-hand corner but is otherwise unattributed. It features the standing figure of Gustave Doré with a pen and sketchbook in his hands on the pavement of what would appear to be Wapping Wall - the street sign for Pelican Stairs is visible on the right hand side. The scene is probably imagined though as the historic pub the Prospect of Whitby is not shown a public house has stood on the site bordered by Pelican Stairs since the early 16th century and the current building was built in the early 19th century. The illustration features typical London types - men in their work clothes a young female clutching a small child and a driver with horse and carriage. London: Grant & Co. unknown

"In 1869 the journalist Blanchard Jerrold 1826–1884 joined forces with the famous French artist Gustave Doré 1832–1883 to produce an illustrated record of the 'shadows and sunlight' of London. As Jerrold later recalled they spent many days and nights exploring the capital often protected by plain-clothes policemen. They visited night refuges cheap lodging houses and the opium den described by Charles Dickens in the sinister opening chapter of The Mystery of Edwin Drood; they travelled up and down the river and attended fashionable events at Lambeth Palace the boat race and the Derby. The ambitious project which took four years to complete was eventually published as London: a pilgrimage with 180 engravings" British Library. Doré's striking chiaroscuro drawings faithfully rendered by a team of the finest French wood-engravers reflects the closeness and contrast of London's social classes. Ray describes it as simply "one of the great illustrated books of the world". First published in English in 1872. Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1876. hardcover
Best.-Nr. 63585London: E. Moxon Son & Co. 1878. FIRST EDITION THUS. Large 4to. 33.5 x 24.5 cm. 16pp. of introductory text followed by the plates. Contemporary full maroon morocco spines ruled with gilt fillets spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments broad inner dentelles gilt marbled endpapers all edges gilt. 37 steel-engraved plates after Gustave Doré including frontispiece. These were each published separately by Moxon about a decade earlier. Old presentation dated Christmas 1910 to flyleaf. An excellent copy. "One of the finest lyrists of the English tongue" Kunitz & Haycraft 612 Tennyson reawakened the general reading public's interest in Arthurian legend with his Idylls of the King. The first four of the cycle's eventual 12 poems were first published in 1859. Tennyson's retelling of the old tales placed them "on a new plateau of respect and significance for writers and artists" Lacy 446. "No other foreign illustrator and few native ones of the period so completely captured the English fancy as Doré…Tennyson and his publisher Moxon greatly favored Doré as an illustrator" Muir Victorian Illustrated Books 227 244. Moxon was in fact "the only publisher ever to commission steel engravings from Doré.the steel engravings give much more of a speckled look to the scenes different from the grainy look of Doré's usual wood engravings. It produces a dreamy mystical serene feeling that is quite different for Doré" Malan 97. London: E. Moxon, Son, & Co., [1878]. hardcover
