""The idea of illustrating these texts had been suggested by the Bibliophile Jacob Paul Lacroix who had been commissioned by Balzac's widow for the philological revision of the text. The illustrations fall within a caricatural and 'droll' vein; they reveal Gustave Doré's immense talent his attraction to landscape and his ease in portraying grotesque characters as well as in capturing burlesque scenes. 'This illustration is like no other in its powerful originality: it is Gaulish Rabelaisian and sparkling with wit. Doré certainly lavished the best of his talent on the Contes drolatiques. They had no success however and the entire edition was marked down. Today it is one of Doré's most sought-after works"" Leblanc. Garnier frères hardcover

Thus the varied torments of the dwellers in Hell are shown with minute and sometimes shocking fidelity" Ray 327-28. 1866rif. B5284London: Cassell Petter and Galpin c. 1866. A fine and handsome example of this work. The text and plates are clean and crisp. . Binding: Contemporary full green cloth binding. Top board with gilt text and tooled borders. Notes: A superbly illustrated edition of the story of the Wandering Jew from the mid 19th century. The illustrations are set to a poem about the Wandering Jew by Pierre-Jean de Ranger. The story of the Wandering Jew dates back to the crucifixion of Christ. The story relates that as Jesus was being led to the spot of his crucifiction a Jewish man shouted insults at him and in response Jesus said “'Verily I say unto you There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” This meant that until the return of Christ this Jewish man would be forced to live and wander the earth. Of course over the centuries there have been “spottings” of the Wandering Jew. Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré 1832 – 1883 was a French artist printmaker illustrator and sculptor.
