His abstract paintings of the 1950s and 1960s presented expressively worked surfaces and a scratchy mark-making; later he arrived at the work for which he is best known abstractions of a more classical bent that evoke the cylindrical geometries of Fernand Leger and Francis Picabia. But from the start Felguerez's painting has been characterized by its earthy feel and warm hues. This superbly produced monograph includes essays on Felguerez by Dore Ashton who reflects on the artist's influence both in Mexico and abroad Mexican writer Juan Villoro who supplies a personal portrait and analyses of the work by Jorge Reynoso and Alberto Gonzalez. Alongside a wealth of excellent color illustrations this monograph provides a detailed contextualizing chronology of the artist's life and times. . 2009. 8492480777 . RM hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- Text in English. 224 pages; 115 illus. -- with a bonus offer--; Since Philip Guston's death in 1980 his late figurative paintings and drawings have steadily reaped the acclaim they deserve--acclaim that was largely denied them during Guston's lifetime Hilton Kramer infamously reviewed Guston as a "mandarin pretending to be a stumblebum" in a damning 1970 New York Times article. This volume reunites a selection of paintings from the Roma series completed during Guston's residency at the American Academy in Rome in 1970-71. From early in his career Guston had taken inspiration from Italian art and his 1973 painting "Pantheon" features a list of Italian painters: de Chirico Masaccio Piero della Francesca Giotto and Tiepolo. Italian cinema especially Fellini and classical sculpture were also dear to his heart. The Roma works consolidate this dialogue with Italian art and culture. Diary entries published alongside the reproductions recount exchanges at the American Academy pilgrimages to Venice Arezzo Sicily and Orvieto and observations of the international cultural community in Rome. . 2010. 3775726322 . I made it a metaphor for flesh and earth."--Stephen De Staebler Over the course of a fifty-year career Stephen De Staebler 1933-2011 created powerful elegiac figurative sculptures in clay and bronze. Extending and assimilating an artistic lineage that includes Michelangelo Auguste Rodin and Alberto Giacometti as well as the art of the ancient Americas Egypt and Greece De Staebler developed a sculptural vocabulary uniquely his own. A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area since the late 1950s De Staebler was among the first students of the legendary Peter Voulkos at the University of California Berkeley. In conjunction with the Bay Area Figurative movement De Staebler helped to infuse the existentialist agenda of Abstract Expressionism with a profound humanism. Illuminating the significance of De Staebler's practice as never before curator Timothy Anglin Burgard analyzes the artist's major pieces. Poet and critic Rick Newby sketches a biographical portrait of the sculptor and renowned art historian Dore Ashton offers a moving tribute to the artist with whom she was a lifelong friend. Produced in collaboration with the artist and his estate this authoritative volume --published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco--offers an unprecedented glimpse into the sculptor's studio and process. . 2012. 0520272307 . A native of Argentina Bonevardi spent the greater part of his career in New York City where he absorbed avant-garde practices and influences such as abstraction and primitivism using them to invent a pictorial and symbolic language with which to express his deep spirituality and affinity for myth and ritual. Bonevardi is best known for his shaped canvases which combine elements of painting and sculpture reflecting his early training and lifelong interest in architecture. During his lifetime Bonevardi received many honors including the International Prize at the X Bienal de Saõ Paulo first prize in the "Ten Argentine Artists at the United Nations" permanent installation and the Platinum Prize from the Konex Foundation. Bonevardi's work has been collected by many leading North American and Latin American museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City; the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires; the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Universidade in Saõ Paulo; and the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City. This lavishly illustrated volume presents the first comprehensive overview of the life and work of Marcelo Bonevardi. Noted art historian Dore Ashton provides a biographical and critical essay that traces Bonevardi's artistic development and situates him in the New York art scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Ashton illuminates the diverse influences that helped shape Bonevardi's art as well as his contribution to important trends in North American and Latin American abstraction. Ronald Christ's in-depth essay draws on extensive interviews with the artist and reviews of his work to offer a focused analysis of the unique themes and techniques that constitute Bonevardi's signature style. Accompanying the essays and chronologies of the artist's life and exhibitions is a catalogue of over three hundred images most in full color that comprise a stunning visual summation of Marcelo Bonevardi's oeuvre. . 2007. 029271436X . "A free-spirited wave of creative energy swept through the San Francisco art community after World War II. Challenging accepted modes of painting Abstract Expressionists produced highly experimental works that jolted the public out of its postwar complacency. Susan Landauer's comprehensive examination of this dynamic movement provides the first clear picture of the artists and influences that came together in San Francisco's invigorating world of Abstract Expressionism. Landauer argues that Abstract Expressionism resulted from a broad collective impulse rather than the inspiration of a small band of New York artists. Documenting the interchanges between the East and West Coasts she cites areas of mutual influence and shows the impact of San Francisco on the New York School including artists such as Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt. San Francisco's Beat poets Dixieland jazz musicians and the area's stunning vistas were essential parts of Abstract Expressionism as were artistic and spiritual contacts with Asia. Under Douglas MacAgy and Clyfford Still the California School of Fine Arts became the undisputed center of vanguard abstraction on the West Coast. Artists such as Edward Corbett Jay DeFeo James Budd Dixon Frank Lobdell and Hassel Smith produced gritty provocative images whose impact extended well beyond California. Landauer also notes the importance of Grace L. McCann Morley director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art who opened the museum to major Abstract Expressionist figures and Jermayne MacAgy who brought local and international artists together. Enlivened by oral histories Landauer's book is a rewarding exploration of a vital period in modern art. Richly illustrated with 96 color plates it celebrates the energy and lasting impact of a special time." -- with a bonus offer--; Landauer Susan; Ashton Dore introduction The San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism PAINTING AMERICAN MODERN 20TH CENTURY . 1996. 0520086104 .
