rif. 122623London Cassell Peter and Galpin circa 1870 . Early Printing; folio 315 x265 mm; engraved frontispiece portrait of the author 86 full-page engraved plates and numerous chapter headings and vignettes throughout age-toning to text block the very occasional minor spot or mark otherwise very good-plus; publisher's brown cloth illutrated gilt panels to upper board and spine rubbed and bumped at extremities slight fraying to corners movement to hinges but not split in the main very good and most handsome. 'The Fables unquestionably represent the peak of La Fontaine's achievement' and this edition that of Doré's as well. 'La Fontaine did not invent the basic material of his Fables; he took it chiefly from the Aesopic tradition and in the case of the second collection from the East Asian. He enriched immeasurably the simple stories that earlier fabulists had in general been content to tell perfunctorily subordinating them to their narrowly didactic intention.' Britannica. A PLEASING AND HANDSOME COPY. SCARCE IN SUCH WELL PRESERVED CONDITION. Gustave Doré was one of the greatest illustrators of his day. He was born in Strassburg in 1832. In 1848 he moved to Paris where “his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary.” He was a prolific worker and his subjects were usually religious or historical. He died in January of 1883. His grand and magnificent style is a perfect complement for Cervantes heroic tale. This great tome presents one of our favorite printings of the Spanish classic and because of the weight of the text block is usually found broken and loose. This copy is as sturdy as one could hope for and is especially handsome as well. Cassell, Petter, and Galpin hardcover
