21, numéro 2, 1997, p. 16-22. 1600Best.-Nr. 032381Paris: Marc Orry 1600 A good copy of the 2nd French edition of Joseph Acosta's important work on the New World first published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was a Jesuit who spent 17 years in South America and Mexico. His work based on careful observation formed one of the first accounts of the New World. This copy is in probably contemporary full vellum binding with yapp edges. The original ties have gone. It is difficult to say if the binding was hard or soft cover because at some point in its history it has had an old stiff embossed wallpaper with gilt birds and flowers used to form new endpapers. There are no pages before the title page which has had a strip added at the bottom and which is coming loose. Contents: title page; dedication pp ii-iv; advert; poems 4pp; Extrait du Privilege du Roi 1p; Text in 7 books pp 1-375; table of contents 34 pp. The text pages are numbered on the recto only. With decorative head pieces and initial capitals. The text is very clean with just the occasional mark and some light underlining at p 238 but p 58 is missing. P 31 is mispaginated as p 13; p 267 is un-numbered and p 97 is very thin with a hole in the bottom margin. The final third of the book is quite difficult to open fully - probably because of the way the endpapers have been added. Marc Orry hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 208 pp. ; 132 illus. 50 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; In 1989 Malcolm McLaren had his only number one hit with a single called "Deep in Vogue." Early the next year Madonna had one of the biggest hits of her career with the single "Vogue" and when Jennie Livingston's film Paris Is Burning arrived in cinemas the same year winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival the mainstream got hip to New York City's extraordinary ball culture from which the film and McLaren and Madonna's songs had arisen. Paris Is Burning documented a gay ballroom scene that emerged in Harlem in the mid-1980s which drew African American and Latino gay and transgender communities to compete against one another for their dancing skills the verisimilitude of their drag and their ability to walk on the runway. Photographer Chantal Regnault spent many years recording this scene from which the dance style known as voguing arose. A visual riot of fashion polysexuality and subversive style Voguing and the Gay Balls of New York City is also an extraordinary document on sexuality and race. The wild years of voguing are vividly captured in Regnault's hundreds of amazing previously unpublished photographs. The book also features interviews with key figures from the movement essays flyers and ephemera. Photographer and documentarist Chantal Regnault was born in France. She left Paris after the 1968 uprisings to live in New York where she lived for the next 15 years. At the end of the 1980s she became immersed in Harlem's voguing scene. Also around this time Regnault developed an interest in Haitian voodoo culture and began to divide her time between Haiti and New York. Her widely published photographs have appeared in major magazines and newspapers including Vanity Fair and The New York Times. 20120201 . 2011. 0955481767 . SJ BOOKS; D. A. P.
