Paperback, English/ Finnish, 151 PAGES Illustrated. fine! ISBN 9789529878871. Timo Sarpaneva was originally trained as a graphic designer and the student assignments from his years at the Central School of Industrial Art (1940 ? 1949) have not been previously published or displayed. Less known works by him also include textile patterns and designs from the 1940s and 1950s. Added to these are paintings and graphic design by Timo Sarpaneva from the same period, 1943 ? 1956. ?Sarpaneva on huomioon otettava koloristinen lahjakkuus, jonka hienostunut taidekäsitys antaa suuria lupauksia?, kirjoitti arvostettu taidekriitikko Edward Richter. Hänen teollista muotoiluaan on palkittu mm. Milanon Triennaleissa Grand Prix'lla. Sarpaneva on ottanut vastaan lukuisia huomionosoituksia mm. Pro Finlandia 1958 Maailman ensimmäinen muotoilun kunniatohtori, Royal College of Art, Lontoo 1967 Professorin arvonimi 1976 Akateemikko H.C., Academia de Diseno, University of Mexico City 1985 Kunniatohtori, Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu 1993

As the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Great Britain was the epicenter of the development of modern industrial design. This book -the fourth volume in the MoMA Design Series, featuring works in the Museum's extraordinary collection- explores this legacy, tracing the growth of British design from the eighteenth century to the Millennium Dome and beyond. In its more than twohundred-year scope, British Design explores Wedgwood pottery, the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Mini car and Dyson vacuum cleaner, the 'Cool Britannia' cultural explosion in the late 1990s, and British designers' take on the digital devices that define entertainment and communication in the early twenty-first century. An introduction by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, provides an overview of design culture in Great Britain; an essay and timeline by Hugh Aldersey-Williams, author of The Most Beautiful Molecule and New American, illuminate the masterpieces of modern British design superbly reproduced in the volume's plate section. Hardcover with dusjacket,. ISBN 9780500519103. While Josef Albers' Bauhaus colleagues Klee and Kandinsky are household names, Albers himself has remained inscrutable. He is best known as the painter of the Homages to the Square, a series of over 2,000 seemingly tightly controlled experiments in the interaction of colour. Yet he did not begin these pictures until he was in his sixties, already several decades into his career as an artist, maker and theorist, much of it pursued in the United States following the Nazi dissolution of the Bauhaus in 1933. Misunderstanding of the Homages reflects a wider misreading of Albers' life and work. Married to the textile artist Anni Albers, his papers include letters from fellow artists John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra and Eva Hesse; colleagues such as Buckminster Fuller and Philip Johnson; and fans and collectors ranging from the composer Virgil Thomson to the cartoonist Saul Steinberg. If his network of influence was surprisingly wide, so, too, were his interests. Albers started life at the Bauhaus as a glassmaker, ran their renowned wallpaper workshop, and designed furniture that is still in production eighty years later. He pioneered the study of colour at Black Mountain College, organized its famed Summer Sessions' with guest tutors from Willem de Kooning to Merce Cunningham, and went on to head the design department at Yale. Drawing on extensive unpublished writings, documents and illustrations, Darwent offers a broad view of not only the artistic and political currents, but also the friendships and rivalries that formed the backdrop to Albers' creative output.

Those who know one or two aspects of the Eameses' work are often surprised to learn just how far and vast their range extended. Yet, throughout their myriad works, from architecture and furniture to exhibition design and filmmaking, their core philosophy prevails. An Eames Primer is the first book to illuminate this seamless connection. Author Eames Demetrios explores the rich energy of the Eameses' world from a unique perspective, informed by his close relationship with Charles and Ray. He shares personal anecdotes, previously unpublished photos, and his extensive interviews with former friends and colleagues of the Eameses to make connections between the Eameses' influential philosophy and their widely admired work. For those unacquainted with the designers, the stories behind the design process will inform, entertain, and inspire, while readers with an extensive knowledge of the Eameses' work gain a deeper level of understanding their process.
