Josef Franz Maria Hoffmann (15 December 1870 ? 7 May 1956) was an Austrian architect and designer, involved in the founding of the Vienna Secession and the central figure of the Wiener Werkstätte which he founded in 1903. Among his best-known designs is the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, the pinnacle of Art Nouveau. His preference for squares and cubes (for Cubism) is characteristic, which earned him the nickname Quadratl-Hoffmann. His style gradually became more austere and abstract and his work became limited over time to functional, household attributes.

Het is in deze context dat men zijn beeldend werk moet plaatsen: een Vlaams surrealisme, dat al woordspelend knipoogt met beelden. In zijn realisaties komt een boeiende ambiguiteit naar voren: verhalende exuberantie gaat hand in hand met de minder-is-meer-soberheid van het minimalisme. Deze beperking waarin men de meester herkent, is de hoofdlijn die Van Praet volgt wanneer hij gebruiksvoorwerpen ontwerpt.
