The exhibition assembled more than 120 works of Buddhist art from a diverse range of countries and traditions to examine the idea of the multiple manifestations of the Buddha across time and space. The banners depict two Buddhas in the Tibetan tradition one of Vajradhara a detail from a gilt bronze statue loaned from Museum Rietburg the printed caption to the lower right of the banner. The exhibition curated by then Head Curator of Asian Art Jackie Menzies aimed to showcase the "pervading universality" of Buddha through different traditions. The Vajradhara was highlighted within the exhibition's narrative as the Primordial Buddha—the ultimate source of all tantric teachings and manifestations. Good/fair A well-handled queer association copy of the first edition of Stella Gibbons' 1949 second novel set at Cold Comfort Farm featuring the ownership inscription of Peter Wildeblood: just two years later in 1951 the journalist and playwright's adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm co-written with Kenneth Tynan who later stood bail for Wildeblood opened at the Haymarket Theatre London. Three years after this staging in January 1954 Wildeblood was arrested for 'gross indecency' under the 1885 Labouchère Amendment alongside Lord Montagu and Michael Pitt-Rivers. During the trial Wildeblood like Wilde before him though using different language acknowledged his 'inversion'. Unlike his queer forebear and near namesake however Wildeblood not only remained in Britain after his prison term but also campaigned for legal change publishing his civil rights-agitating-cum-prison memoir Against the Law 1955 and providing evidence to the Wolfenden committee. Books from Wildeblood's library are rare indeed we've been unable to trace what happened to it: do please get in touch if you can tell us more. Longmans, Green and Co hardcover

1968réf. List2843New York City 1968. 20 x 28 inches. Folded with some tears at folds slightly wrinkled; inscribed “Sam – / You must come! / Send money / Lou Dorfsman”. Very good plus. An invitation to the “Recooperation Baths” which seems to be an annual get-together for Cooper Union alumni. Cooper Union was founded in 1859 by business magnate Peter Cooper to offer a tuition-free education in practical areas such as architectural drawing shorthand and the like. No longer free Cooper Union now consists of three schools: art architecture and engineering. Graphic designer Lou Dorfsman 1918–2008 who inscribed this poster with a message for “Sam” graduated from Cooper Union in 1939. He would serve on its board of directors and as this poster states on its Alumni Committee. More famously Dorfsman was the art director and later creative director at CBS where he designed not just programming advertisements but also sets and the CBS headquarters’ interior. The poster promises alumni “an evening of gayety jollity merriment entertainment swimming dancing drinking dining” at the Woolworth Building in Tribeca – probably at its private basement swimming pool. unknown
