1867ref. 26901Melbourne: Hamel & Ferguson 1867. Print. Plate II from Eugene von Guérard's Australian Landscapes 1866-68. Gold was discovered in Beechworth Victoria in 1852 and shortly thereafter along the Ovens River. In the same year Austrian-born von Guerard arrived in Victoria Australia determined to try his luck on the goldfields. Like many he failed as a miner but he did produce numerous studies of goldfields life including this image depicting men working on a sluice. Color lithograph signed in the plate with the oval blind stamp for the publisher Hamel & Ferguson below the title. Image incl. text 14 x 20" on paper 19 1/2 x 26". Archivally cleaned and backed some minor marginal splits repaired. Color tastefully enhanced. Libraries Australia ID 7744587. Hamel & Ferguson unknown

Folio (430 x 320 mm), [4], 373, [3], liii, [1]pp., printed for private circulation only in 200 copies, early armorial bookplate to front paste-down, cont. half blue morocco, marbled boards, slightly rubbed otherwise a very good copy indeed. Printed uniformly with the catalogue of books and, like that work, printed only for presentation. The map collection was an important constituent of the Royal library (Samuel Johnson recommended buying maps locally in his famous letter to Barnard); The King's Topographical Collection of around 50,000 maps, charts, prints and drawings formerly owned by George III and donated to the Library by George IV, included antiquarian drawings by William Stukeley, large collections of views by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, the Bucklers and Edward Blore, and the drawings from Captain Cook's voyages or Robert Hay's of Egypt. It was reprinted in 2 vols. 8vo in the same year for commercial distribution. Martin, Privately Printed Books, p. 259.

The lithograph was created by Edmund Walker 1813 or 1814-1882 of Day & Son after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray 1818-1854 was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery Inhabitants & Costumes of Afghaunistan 1847-48. This is plate no. 2 a portrait of Dost Mohammed who had been deposed as Emir of Afghanistan. In January 1841 when Rattray was granted an audience with him in Peshawar Dost Mohammed was a prisoner on his way to exile in Calcutta. Rattray wrote that since Dost Mohammed had been "a ruler just and merciful and attentive to affairs of state" the people of Peshawur thought that he had been unjustly treated by the British. The lithograph was created by Edmund Walker 1813 or 1814-1882 of Day & Son after James Rattray's drawing. This is plate no. 22 in regard to which Rattray wrote: "I sketched this Uzbeg at the Fort of Lughmaunee Cohistaun." The ambassador represented Mir Wali prince of the frontier town of Kulum near Kunduz. In September 1840 the British were negotiating with Wali to transfer his allegiance to Shah Shuja.
